Dunno, last Toyota filter I saw was the factory one I took off in 1999. (Boy, was that sucker on tight. What a pain!) I've used Wix exclusively in everything I have maintained since about 1980. That's a lot of cars and trucks plus one tractor with nothing but good results.

The 51516 (4.828") is taller than the standard V6 4Runner Wix 51348 (3.404") by 1.420".

How tall is a D3?

I think they are all the same diameter or very close. Thw Wix are 74mm.

So OEM filters are hard to come by on this island. My previous filter was a "Purolator" brand. This time I used the Wix 51348 filter because it was lower price. I think that purolator filter is just rebranded. I do like the feel and look of the Wix filter, the other one just felt cheap even though I paid more for it. At 4.8" does that XP filter give you trouble? I can only remove and install my filter through the wheel well but I have long arms so reaching isnt a problem. My skid plate has 2 stripped bolt heads (the recessed ones) so going that route is not currently possible. Im curious about the larger filter since every mile I put on this 4runner is a short trip. There are no highway miles here. It really does a number on the oil.

Installation is no issue. I also go through the wheel well. I use a cap type wrench on a long ratchet extension, and taller actually makes it easier. I've been doing it for 17 years+ so I'm pretty good at it.

Purolator is a very old name in the oil filter business. The family that owned it at one time are friends of mine. I'd be surprised if they were rebranding Wix filters. That's not showed up on any comparisons I have seen.

I just used the last one in my batch I had a couple of weeks ago so I can't go measure easily, but a little googling shows it at about 3.9 inches. So basically an inch shorter for the D3.

Are there any issues with installation or removal? I assume you are going through the wheel well? I might just use this filter on the next oil change.

I guess I will have to put Purolator on my approved list of filters. It's so frustrating here having to pick a different filter every time I need one. The stock fluctuates so much. I originally wanted to use the wix filter but there no compatible ones last time I looked until 2 days ago. I suppose the inside is what counts for oil filters, not how it feels on the outside. Do you think I could benefit from the extended filter? I'm only driving like 3-4000 miles a year, changing oil ever 4 months. The oil is always super dark which I think is due to the lack of highway miles and I have no idea what the gas quality is down here.

I should know better than to post in an oil thread. Too many opinions.

I use AMSOIL because I have a boosted engine and I've increased the supercharger RPM's by 50%. I produce a whole lot more heat and wear on my engine than a normal stock one.

I use castrol synthetic.

Good quality oil. Plus it's advertised on the TOM toyota Supra lol

Yeah there is not really any "bad" oil for a 4Runner. Heck, some people on here have gone 75,000 miles on a single oil change when they bought the 4Runner, search the threads it's pretty hilarious.

Oil is really just personal preference.

The over-sized Gen3 oil filter for the 3.4L-v6, is 1.424" longer overall.
- may be factory on the Land Cruiser, if I recall
Filter 30% longer in length means more filter media, to trap dirt, and better for extended oil frequencies.

Just a thought, but how are your rear heater lines looking? A small hole in one of those could be easily missed.

That's exactly what I had. I was a pain to change out.

I agree...mine would hit..and was a mother to get into place. They are cheap insurance...(Purolators off Amazon)...I just swap a new filter every 3K and replace on change.
