Ordered some new speakers

So I ordered some new speakers from crutchfield, they came in and when I went to install them I noticed that the bracket that they included didn't match the door. The tech told me that I might have to drill some holes in the door, I said no way. So he went ahead and looked up a replacement set for me and mentioned that I can actually fit 6.5" on my rear door. He said that the braket that I originally got from them should make them fit.

Has anyone done the 6.5" speakers in the rear?? I found some brackets on Amazon and they run me about $56, seems kinda pricy for me but if I can fit the replacements then all I have to do is return the ones I'm not using.

Btw: crutchfield is pretty awesome with their tech support, he upgraded me to a bigger size for free since they sent me a braket that supposedly fits my door but it doesn't, so that was pretty cool

6.5" speakers in rear door = drilling

When you take off the door panel you should see the rears are much smaller than 6.5" but you can easily fit a 6.5" with a small amount of cutting and some basic mounting screws. I used a sharpie and metal cutting shears. Don't be scared. It will be fine and no one can see it, even if you screw up somehow.

I have 6.5" Kappas in all 4 doors. I used adapter plates made from PVC and I didn't have to drill. I'm waiting to hear back from the company as to wither or not they make them anymore.

I've only seen these adapters for 5 1/4".

You will need to drill and cut for larger speakers I believe. Don't see why that would be an issue. Simple modification.

Crutchfield is a known good company but behind on pricing. They sell at MSRP online which is ridiculous. You can find all there stuff for way cheaper. I would never buy from them.

I think the 6.5 would fit, depends on what speakers you got. There is a bracket that Crutchfield sends that may help you get the speakers in. The problem is usually the DEPTH not the circumference. Not to mention how far out they sit, so you can get the door panel back on. Take a look at my speaker installation. I don't know what speakers you went with, but I went wit the Kicker speakers, which had 4 screw points. So it really made the mounting easier for me.

Edit- I used those speaker adapters that [MENTION=50342]JayRolla[/MENTION] has a link posted to. Really cheap for the help of fit and finish I was looking for.

Crutchfield prices are known to be higher like previously stated.

I just put 6.5s in the front and planning on putting some 6.5s in the rear. I am probably going to drill and screw the speaker after opening the hole the required amount.

I would not worry much about drilling the door for the speakers, a good self-tapping screw and that speaker will never move.

send some pics of your set-up when you have it installed.

The main thing to worry about is actually the depth of the speakers. I ran in to that issue on the front ones(image dynamics components). I did smaller speakers in the back so it didn't come up.

The Infinity speakers I bought came with adapters shown in the image below. I just cut off the 3 larger tabs and worked perfectly. I don't see a way to buy these outside of buying a new speaker set from Infinity though...

For me to get Alpine type r component 6.5 in the rear door, I knew ahead of time that I'd have to make a spacer. I just took a plastic cutting board from the kitchen, cut it to the size i needed, drilled the holes to mount to the door, and the holes to mount the speaker. Perfect fit behind the door panel.

That's actually not a bad idea... I'm going to have to take that into consideration. Did you use a 1/4" cutting board?? And was it plastic?

I know I purchased the from speakers through another site. The only reason I used crutchfield for the tears were because they were the same price as everywhere I looked but they included the mounting brackets. But now I get a free upgrade in size for the same price because the brackets didn't match

So I end up winning, I just gotta figure out try braket situation

Plastic nylon stuff. Didn't really cut it with a saw, more of s melt. I think remember it being 3/8". I bought a set, I'll check what I still have in the kitchen when I get home.

Be careful with the depth. Some speakers are too deep and won't let you roll the back windows down all the way. I've got JL Audio speakers up front that I got for a steal a little while ago. Stock rear speakers. Most important thing is to amp your speakers. Kenwood and alpine make small amps that fit where the stock one was. I think my 4Runner sounds really good. Also did sound deadening in the doors while I had them apart.

I looked back at my photos though, and I did not mount them directly to the door (how did I forget that?). Also you have to trim the door panel a bit. So it's not exactly drill free, no holes in the door but possibly in the plastic door panel. I had it wrong sorry. But it's not the end of the world... I'm sure there's easier ways, such as cuting a wider hole and taping a 3rd screw or something.
