Damn man, that sucks. So it happened on the way home from the oil change? Maybe they replaced the filter and put the plug back in but forgot to fill it with new oil? Did you have it towed back to the same dealer? I would raise hell with them because if it was running fine before the oil change then that happened, it would stand to reason that it was something they did. Good luck with that, sorry to hear it.
Yes, the engine exploded on the freeway. It was raining heavily, strong wind, and low visibility. The car stalled and stopped on the narrow side of the freeway.
I turned the emergency blinkers on, but still afraid to be hit by the following cars on the freeway. So, I left my car and walked on the freeway (I was soaping wet, in rain) toward the next freeway exit.
Well, long story short, it was hack of a walk and I was lucky to be alive to tell this story. I am just glad that it was me, not my wife, in the car when the engine exploded. Also I am glad that the engine debris and oil didn't cause any car accidents on the freeway...
When I towed the car back to the dealer, the dealer refused to admit anything wrong related to them, and insisted that was a Toyota (car company) problem indeed. Now, the Toyota dealer and the Toyota Car Company are pointing fingers to each other, and I am stuck in the middle without help from either of them.

I guess you never noticed your oil pressure gauge while driving it from the dealer?
I say they drained it put new filter on it and forgot the oil. Most of the time it is not a master mechanic doing the oil changes at the dealer
: know what I mean.
A tear down of the motor will tell if the engine lacked oil, I say spun bearing and you thru a rod causing the boom, the dealer is screwed....time to start rasing Hell.
BTW this is why I do my own oil changes.

sounds like they forgot to put the oil in. same thing happened to my friend in his jeep... he started driving after getting an oil change minus the oil, and the piston went through the engine block.
i say get a lawyer too... they need to fess up to their mistake and pay for the damages.

I also suggest contacting an attorney. They can hopefully get Toyota and the dealership to stop the finger pointing. The dealership stands to lose more by fighting Toyota than to make it right for you.
It may also be worth filing a complaint with the state's attorney general and Better Business Bureau, too.
That sucks. A savvy engine guy should be able to tell what happened by looking inside the engine.

When you go to the dealer, you had better have another mechanic standing by to check their work. The few times I have taken a car to the Toyota dealer, I have regretted it. One time they left the dip stick on top of the engine, another time they "forgot" to do half the things on a 60k service - no lube - no filter change - no brake fluid flush (requested). I believe they just did all the easy fluid changes. Well they did it all over again with me breathing down their necks.
The service manager's only excuse was to whine about how many cars they had to push thru every day! The management push the grunts enough that they take shortcuts.
Morons and thieves - never again.
