Ouch!!!!!!!

i was driving down the highway yesterday doing about 80 mph. my wife slid her seat forward to get something behind her seat. i heard a strange noise and realized that my runner was losing power. i looked at the dash and noticed that the runner was in reverse rather than drive. frantically i ripped on the gear shift and put her back in drive. it seems that, when my wife slid the seat forward, the seat caught a hold of my hat which was on the gear shift. the hat, in turn, pulled the gear shift from drive - through neutral, into reverse.

i think that the strange noise that i heard was the engine screaming. my guess is that the truck decided that reverse was not the right course of action when you are doing 80 mph so it overrode my "choice" and went into neutral. since i was holding the gas pedal down pretty far, i am quite sure that i was revving the hell out of the engine for at least 2 or 3 seconds.

the truck seems fine, no problem with the gears or anything. my questions are:

is there a rev limitter that would have prevented me from revving it at 7500 rpm? i did not get a chance to look at the tachometer during this event so i don't know how high the engine was revving.

in the event that there isn't a rev limitter, how do i tell if i did any damage?

what is the possibility that i screwwed up something in the tranny?

You're lucky it was not manual trans. As for automatic: no damage done, it's just simply wont engage in reverse if you still moving forward. Trany cluches prevent that.
 
I had the same thing happen to me a few weeks ago when the wife was messing around and wacked her into reverse while I was doing 65 on the highway. Talk about panic! You should be alright though, mine has been fine but I had to throw away that pair of pants :eek:.

I would have the shifter checked out because it is not supposed to be able to shift into reverse....from drive to nueteral yes but not reverse.....there is linkage that needs you to push in the button brfore you can shift into reverse.......at least that is the way it is in my '02 SE 4runner.........just my opinion.....

It's different for the 03's and up. I think everything is electronic now, no more buttons on the shifter.
 
I don't think anything happened because the transmission would not let the truck shift into reverse if you are going fast. It would leave the truck in neutral when your gear shifter is actually in reverse. The only thing that probably happened is your back up lights would go on. I would have loved to see the drivers face behind you when they saw that! I wouldn't worry about it though because these trucks are fulll of computers that will prevent you from doing anything bad to the truck.

The only thing I don't understand is how you were able to shift from neutral to reverse without your foot on the brake?

Unfortunately the gated shifter needs a wider/better lock-out notch from neutral to reverse. The good thing is, no damage will accrue if accidentally engaged.

If in fact the car did go in to neutral I dont think you have anything to worry about, because in Neutral your at idle RPMS wich is in and around 1000 rpms? not quite sure/ I doubt you got it all the way to 7500 rpms in neutral without knowing it.

With modern auto trannies and rev limiters, you couldn't get a T4R it to 7,500 rpm if you wanted to ;)

No damage done, the trans and engine have safetys in place for this exact reason! That said, I still wouldn't make a habit out of it ;)

I've put my tranny in, say, 2nd and floored it up to rev limiter....it just bounces off the RL and will not over-rev.
