Tell your husband to have fun taking the dash apart to get at the stereo....it's not as simple as pulling it out.

I'm the proud new owner of a 2005 SR5 4runner... Well my wife is... Part of the deal is that I would uprade the stereo from the factory unit. The model we bought has the base unit. AM radio from a 1970 ford sounds better. Anyways, I'm about to order the DNX7100 / speakers / AMP to do the upgrade over the holidays and wanted to ask the big question. How do you take the dash off ? This is the part I hate! You never know if you missed a screw or something. Regarding the door, does it just snap off also ?

Yes, the door snaps off but there are a bunch of hidden screws you'll need to find....the armrest snaps off to reveal one, and the plastic plate directly behind the door handle also comes off to reveal another one.

Did you figure out what all the wires are that come out of the stock unit ? I'm at the point now where I need to figure out what wire is for what ;-)
Did you find anything on the internet breaking the different connectors?
Also, anything special to keep in mind when installing the Kenwood?

Nice choice on units! You will love it.
As far as the connections, I was lucky in that I had first used the TYTO-01 to connect the OEM system to the unit. Once I replaced the rest of the system, I used 1/2 of the TYTO-01 (the side that plugged into the OEM harness) for the power, acc, and ground connections...the wires were nicely labled.
A couple of searches on this board and you'll find all the wiring diagrams and places to tap into reverse sensors and such.
No special instructions...just take your time and don't rush it. If you click on the "Kenwood DNX7100" link in my signature that information should help out.

Airbur, awesome right up and nice job on the install. I am planning on getting the dnx7100 as well but will probably let the local Cartoys folks do the work since I lack the engineering skills you seem to possess (and they've done good work before).
I have the JBL 10speaker (03 4runner ltd) and want to improve the sound "just a little".
Couple of questions for you:
1. What components should I "upgrade" for cleaner/better sound. (I have a pair of jbl cs-10" subs I was going to try and get them to squeeze into the stock area).
2. Can I use the existing amp to power everything
3. Will I lose the center speaker by installing the dnx7100? (this is important to me - I would hate to lose that).
Any advise/comments/suggestions are appreciated.
Also, I've read the reviews on the dnx7100 and it got dinged for "poor menu layout", but this does appear to be the best bang for the buck.

Hey lookstock...nice choice on the DNX7100...I still love it.
1. As far as upgrading the stock system, you can't. It's all integrated together and if you swap out some components, you'll need to swap out the entire system including wiring.
2. See #1.
3. Yes, you will lose the center speaker....if you get some good aftermarket speakers for the doors, you won't miss it at all. I don't!
As far as the menus go...they are great. It's a very visual display and I didn't have any problems navigating the menus. I did quite a bit of research before settling on the DNX7100 and I'm VERY happy with my decision...the sound is awesome, the display works great....try watching the movie "300" sometime...it's amazing on that tiny display! And the Garmin Nav is seemless.
Fyi...if you've read my other post regarding the unit's installation, you know that it sounded pretty bad (to me) using the METRA TYTO-01 adapter to the OEM 10 speaker system. You may have better luck.
Good luck and seriously consider swapping out the entire system. I know it's more $$ but in the end you will be much happier.

Thanks for the quick reply...based on your response, I may just upgrade all of it. So let me make sure I understood your response correctly.
