Outside temp display only goes down to -30C

Come to think o fit, the lowest that I have seen the temperature read is -30C as well, even though it has been colder than that here in Saskatchewan this winter. The firecast is for -34C tomorrow and Sunday night. I'll take a peek at the dash to see if it states anything colder than -30C.

I'm impressed with how well the 4runner starts at those temps, even if I forget to plug in the block heater. The starter turns the engine over at close to the same speed when cold as compared to if the engine is already warm...impressive. I actually do not know what grade of oil is in my 4runner.....I just bought it a month ago from a toyota dealer, and it has whatever oil in it that they put in it (likely the 5W30 as recommended by the owners manual). IIRC, from some past research that I did into minumum pour temperatures of oils, Toyota oil scored well for cold weather performance.

According to Environment Canada, it is -33C, but the outside air temp display in my 4runner shows -30C. Earlier when it was -32C out, the display still read -30C.

I grew up in North Dakota...blizzards, ice, -60F temps, brrr. I once flew home to ND to visit family from Austin, TX. When I departed the airport in Austin, the outside temp was 60F in December. When I landed in Grand Forks, ND it was -60F!

Saw this thread a couple weeks ago and thought I would share this. Right now in MN we are getting some cold weather. This early morning it was about -30 degrees F without the wind. My temp gauge stopped at -22 degrees on my way to work. Think it just gave up and froze, I wish I could of, Brrrrr. :israel:

The nice thing about -36 is that it makes -22 feel fantastic! I was outside without a coat cleaning the snow off of my 4runner and was surprised at how nice it felt.

Also live in MN. Our vehicles are garaged at night, but decided to take wife to work yesterday so she wouldn't have to worry about her minivan not starting when she got off. Also, 4Runner has better heater. Temp was -24F in the morning, but readout only went to -22F.

Agree; must be sensor limit thing.

I cant even imagine temps that cold. I dont think ive ever been in negative anything. The coldest it gets here is maybe mid 30s and thats very rare and only in the dead middle of the night on the coldest nights. Right now its still mid to high 70s in the days and mid to high 40s at night.

Thanks guys. Well -22F = -30C so I think it is confirmed that we have maxed out our outside temperature displays!

It's too bad. Its nice to snap a pic of the display when its ridiculously cold to send to friends/family in the warmer climates.

As someone else also said, I am very impressed with the cold starting capabilities of the 4runner. Mine started at -40C with no plug in. Barely started and I think if it was a degree colder it wouldnt have..

HMMM -60 I doubt that considering that last and only time in ND it was -60 was back in 1936
