I have a 1989 Toyota pickup, 2 wheel drive, 4 cylinder. It takes my truck approx 20 minutes on local roads to change up to overdrive.l If I am on highway, it doesn't change at all unless I pull over and let the engine run for about 10 minutes in idle, then it will change out after I take off. Could this be a sensor problem and if it is where is this sensor located? Any other suggestions? I would appreciate your help. Thanks. John

There is a coolant sensor that controls the overdrive. If the coolant is below 120 degrees the transmission will not shift into overdrive. You may have a thermostat that is stuck open. Does Your vehicle have sufficient heat from the heater? Does your temp gauge only rise a little bit above the C? If so your thermostat needs replacing?
If the thermostat is OK you can just disconnect the sensor and the transmission will always shift into overdrive regardless of coolant temperature.
