Overfilling engine oil - advice please !

Hi all,

As I was checking my engine oil level this morning, I found out it was somewhat low ( I just changed my oil 5 days ago ). I added engine oil but overdid it. It was " a bit over " the HIGH MARK level and it concerns me.

Should I go down and remove the oil plug to get some of those oil out of the engine or should I leave it as it is ? Any consequences of having bad thing happen to the engine because of too much oil ? Advice me, please !

Warm up the vehicle & recheck it.

Have you always been putting 5qt? If so..just leave it.

But if it makes you feel better, go drain it a little.
 
wait these only take 5qts o boy i been butting 5.5qts in papa's truck for the last few years and i put 6qts in mine since i use a taller oil filter

What is the logic behind warming it up & rechecking ? Isn't it more accurate to get the proper engine oil level when the vehicle was parked overnight ? Yes, I would feel a lot better going down and drain it a little if that is the right thing to do. Thanks again.

The only problem you could run into with too much oil is aeration. I would think it would take quite a bit over full to cause this. How much over are you? .5 qt? whole qt?

Overall, I put 5.75 quartz in. If Elton H puts 6qtz., then I should be fine then. I sure will check the oil level warm and will check the level again first thing in the morning and will update you folks !

Overfilling by that amount is no big deal. BTW, the "full" and "low" marks on the dipstick represent one quart of oil. So it's fairly easy to gauge how much over or under full you are by looking at the dipstick.

I assumed that you just did the oil change, checked the level & went onto the forum to ask for opinions. :biggrin2:

Starting the engine & letting it cycle will change the level reading compare to JUST pouring the oil in.

It's weird how everyone is putting more than 5.5qts in their 3rd Generation. Because I have a 1GR (V6 4.0) & I put 5.5qts and I'm running the taller oil filter.

Out of curiousity...did you just recently acquire the 4Runner & this is your 1st oil change.

After my 1st oil change & checking the dipstick. I no longer check my dipstick anymore.

Hi K.C.,

No. I had the 4Runner for five years ( since 47K miles ) now and I do my oil changes as much as possible. This year, I've been switching back and forth to synthetic/dino. I recently used Royal Purple 5W-30 and was just anal about monitoring them ( you know they say it could leak ). I love my 4Runner and treat it like I will own it forever ! I still check my dipstick every morning no matter how long I have been doing oil changes and that's just me.

What actually prompted me to post was due to my manual saying 5.5 quartz and it should not go pass over the FULL mark. But I am at peace now. I still have a quarter left in my 6th bottle.:thumb3:

i use a slightly larger filter(Napa gold 1516), 6 qts barely get to the hi-mark on the dipstick. you are fine.
 
As promised, I did check my oil level when the engine was warm and I got just a bit over the FULL mark. This morning when the engine sat overnight the dipstick reading was a bit over the FULL marking.

I made a decision based on all of your experiences, suggestions and confirmations not to worry about it. My 4Runner runs just fine.

My appreciation, thanks again and looking forward for your help when something comes up.

I assumed the 3.4 took 5 qts. after 5 it was barely at the min line. at 6 it was close to the full, 6.5 was right at the full line for me. I check my oil every 300 miles, still at the full line.

Now this is something that I have to think twice. 6 quartz is somewhat beyond my comfort zone ( I freaked out with 5.75 qts ), more so, 6.5 ! Why that many engine oil to fill yours up when in fact we have the same 3.4L engine ?

Is anybody else getting the feeling Toyota had a quality control issue with their dipsticks? :snacker:

I use the Tundra 5.7L oil filter, puts the oil capacity at 6 qts even.....

I think it will be an interesting find and subject. My Toyota Dealership is only 4 miles away. I will bring that up next time I am there and see what they have to say, thanks.

I'll take a picture of my dipstick tomorrow. 6.5qts of 5w-30 valvoline full synthetic and toyota filter.
