Overfilling engine oil - advice please !

Specs as per manual
5VZ-FE engine
With filter ------------ 5.5 qt.
Without filter ------------ 5.2 qt.

Following the manual is always a good first step but you still have to check it. If we all just followed the manual all our runners would be in the tranny shop. 2.1 qts for a drain and fill? I'll put in (around) 4.5 which is what it actually took. Didn't measure exactly so -around- is as close as I can get on that one.
I checked mine cold and its a little bit above normal. I went threw my owners manual and read some more...
Page 199 says...
"With the engine at operating temperature and turned off, check the oil level on the dipstick"
"1. To get a true reading, the vehicle should be on a level spot. After turning off the engine, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the bottom of the engine."
Heres a picture. This is with 6.5 qts, 1 qt above what the owners manual instructs.
(this is cold, which the owners manual instructs you NOT to do) I do feel however it gives you a good idea if you have oil or don't (If on level ground).
Be back in a few minutes with the operating engine temperature readings.

It made me feel better going down and drained a little. After so much variances with same engine oil filling, I resorted to double check mine for accuracy. If Toyota manual says overfilling was bad for the engine, then it makes a good point to heed their advice. After all, if I am shooting for 300K on my 4Runner, a little dose of " perfectionism " could not hurt anyway.
By the way, I drained the whole engine oil out in a clean container and pour them back in cautiously. It was a longer process, but cleaner.

It's a small price to pay to make you feel better about something that's been boggling your mind.
• Just be sure to replace the drain plug gasket at every oil change.
• Torque down the drain plug to 29 ft/lbs.
And now after you've into the correct amount, you no longer have to check your dipstick in future oil changes. Just add the same amount, set it & forget it.

I do my oil changes at 5,000 now.
• I replace the oil & oil filter.
• Replace drain plug gasket.
• Torque to 29 ft/lbs.
• (5) wheel rotation.
• Clean the rotors & brake components.
• Will soon press back the brake piston at every oil change interval now, because I've read that 4th Generation is prone to have the piston seize up.
• Spray spray-wax on my under carriage.
• Put wheels back on & torque it in a star pattern.
• Re-torque after 20miles.
• I replace the oil & oil filter.
• Replace drain plug gasket.
• Torque to 29 ft/lbs.
• (5) wheel rotation.
