OK, my 93 Hilux Surf 3.0L V6 is overheating.
I had the radiator repaired 2 days ago because it was leaking out in like 10 minutes. I had the seam at the botom tank soldered.
Now it's not leaking but it's still overheating. It overheats when I drive it hard. Like up a steep hill. But the temp goes down once I reach the top of the hill and coast down the other side.

It has a 4 month old thermostat so I don't think thats it. Plus if the thremostat was stuck wouldn't it heat up and not go back down?

I'm wondering if the water pump went. Do you think that would cause it to overheat when I drive it hard?

I'm just befuddeled.

Thermostat probubly stuck closed. It's only few dollars part and easy to replace. I'd start there.

The first thing I would check is the fan.

Does the temperature gauge heat up quickly when the vehicle is not moving?

If so, then it is obvious that the fan is not providing enough air flow, especially considering that the temperature gauge drops when coasting down a hill (where the fan isn't even needed)

What could be wrong with the fan? It seems to spin, it is totaly in tact and the blades are clean.

I'm still wondering if it's the water pump.

Oh yea, another thing is it has fresh clean water in it also. (Don't need antifreeze and it's EXPENCIVE here)

I'm on your side. I just live in the Caribbean on the turdhole known as St. Kitts. We drive on the left here so thats why I have a Jap model Hilux Surf instead of a 4Runner. It's just got a right hand drive and a different name on the tailgate.

Another random question: When did they start the 3rd generation?

You may need antifreeze more than you think....... Antifreeze does 3 things for you:

1) Lowers the freezing point of coolant.
2) Raises the Boiling point of the coolant.
3) Has a corrosion inhibitor to prevent rust/corrosion and scale.


#1 is not important in St. Kitts but #2 and #3 still are. #2 might be the cause of your problem.

I'm not familiar with the engine in your vehicle, but does it use a standard clutch fan? Or electric fans?

If it has a clutch fan, be sure that the fan is spinning with the engine running and vehicle stopped.

By the way, I work with a girl from St Kitts. She always tells me how nice it is there.

Yes, the fan is a clutch fan and it does spin when the engine is running and the truck isn't moving.

I'm from Albany NY and I don't like it here. St. Kitts is a nice place to visit but I'm DONE living here!

This may or may not be the cause of your problem.

If the coolant starts boiling you end up with a gas pocket (steam) collecting at the water pump, then the pump can't circulate coolant.

Also, most engine sensors that read the water temp will not work correctly with out anti-freeze in the mixture. Running straight water can cause them to give a false reading.

You may also have a problem with the radiator core being plugged up, and it doesn't cool well enough to handle a high load condition.

Yes yes yes, use a 50/50 mix of very clean (de-ionized, or ulta filtered) water and anti-freeze. Anti-freeze will prevent boiling by raising the boiling temp, because boiling causes air bubbles an poor cooling or no-cooling. Straight water is simply a bad idea, you will overheat constantly.

Also, check the thermostat. If it's a 160-180 degree thermostat, put it into a pot of bioling water on the stove and make sure it opens.

Also have your radiatior cap pressure checked, they do go bad sometimes. The radiator sytem is designed to run under higher pressure,something like 15psi is typical. A shop can test it. They're cheap to replace as well. If it's a weak spring, the anti-freeze will boil more easily because of not enough pressure.

OK, now that it's Monday and the parts store is open I'll go today to get some antifreeze!

Using deionized or ultra filtered water is simply not going to happen here. It's just not available.

The radiator cap is brand new. Just got it Friday. While I'm in St. Kitts NEVER tell me anything is cheap to replace. A starter for my friends Samurai cost him $900EC ($333US) The corner light for my truck costs $190EC ($70US) for 1 side! I don't want to know what the water pump costs should I need to replace that.

Should I put some water pump lube in if I can find it?

I'd run a 'coolant system flush' product from the auto parts store in your truck.

Or some washing soda (2 cups) and water.

Then drain and replace with 50/50 mix.


You may want to use bottle water in your cooling system. The desalinaized water is probably not good for the cooling system.

Most good brands of anti-freeze have a lubricant additive in them already.

Gentlemen,

Something about toyota coolant system is that if you do not remove all the air out of the system, air pockets will cause coolant not to flow. Maybe, when you are going up hills an air pocket is moving so that it is causing no coolant flow. Then when you go down hills or when you are sitting level, the air pocket might move letting coolant flow.

You should try draining and refilling the coolant per the instructions in the manual. Maybe the tech that replaced your radiator did not refill correctly. Half the time people screw up that part of fixing coolant systems.

Trust me you should try this first. Or you know, maybe the water pump got used to operating under less pressure from the coolant. Then when you repaired everything the added pressure caused the pump to fail.

I got the antifreeze but won't be able to get it in there untill tomorrow morning because it's dark out now.

I couldn't find any water pump lube today I'll try the other parts store. (Their is only 2)

Good news if it's bad news, the water pump will only cost me $390EC ($144US). Thats a fucking bargan!!!! AND they have one in stock should I be unfortunate enough to need it.

So, I'll also look for a flush addative tomorrow.

You don't have any source of deionized water in St. Kitts??

Around here, you can buy it by the gallon at CVS, some supermarkets, other drug stores etc...

It's important to fill your radiator with water that is free of minerals.
