Overheating 167770 miles. 2005 T4R SR5 V6

Hello, I just did my commute to work (15 miles going 55 65 mph) and the gauge almost went to oh hell no red zone while i was waiting for the light to turn green on a hill (Sutter st San Francisco). This has never happened to me for the lifetime of the car I've owned it since 2005.

On August 28th i went to Tennessee for the Appalachian Toyota Round Up. Drove around hit some trails got the car muddy. Then drove back home got home the following Thursday September 7th. Never had a single problem, the next morning i start her up she sounds a bit weird so i change the oil since i drove 5300 miles. The day after that idiot light turns on i check the code its misfiring cylinder no.6 ok. Ill change the coil boots and the spark plugs (haven't done it yet since it starts up fine and the light hasn't turned on). Speed it up till now Tuesday the 11th it starts overheating, So i go to the nearest car wash was out the radiator engine bay and under the engine and radiator, since i haven't washed out the mud from my trip. I'm super scared that engine is dying on me and really hates me for driving 10 days straight. But I've done trips like this before. And she worked great. Can anyone give me some insight because instead of trouble shooting i was thinking of buying a new radiator, fan clutch, thermostat, spark plugs, water pump and coil boots just so i can be in the clear.


Forgot to mention i replaced the water pump and belt at 135k or 155k at the dealer since i don't know how to change the water pump and belt. I also smelled the reserve tank of the radiator fluid and it smells like Toyota factory radiator fluid and its still red. No bubbles no discoloration.

Again anyone with advice will be taken i love my car i don't want to get rid of her. Or swap a motor anything big like that. Also if anyone in the San Francisco area knows a great shop they trust to fix these types of problems and run test like pressure test and what not let me know aswell any info will be much appreciated.

You took a power washer to a rad?

What was the weird sound you heard that made you do an oil change?

You say the water pump and belt was replaced 135k/155k. How many miles has it been since then?

When the engine is cold, take off the rad cap. See if theres any discoloration of any kind. Report back to us.
 
Have it checked for a blown head gasket.

One question, you said you've owned it since 2005 and I noticed the info under your name says you're 23 years old, so are you saying you have own this since you were 11 years old, how did you get a driver's license at 11?


Edit: Just an FYI, the coolant should be pink not red, if indeed it is red someone out the wrong coolant in it at some point!!

I power washed yes.

It felt and sounded like it wanted to stall

Its been i think 20k to 30k miles.

I checked the radiator cap when it was cold and its clean and smelled fine. But i did see small amount of bubbles coming from the reserve tank.

Yeah its been in the family since 2005 and it was given to me when i was 20. But technically i did own it since i was 11 yrs old. Lol.

Damn. Really. I see a sticky thread about this same reason. Ill go and read on it see if i can do the job my self since i have done the valve covers my self.

Also the coolant is pink i just assumed everyone called it red.

Does it only start to overheat when you're stopped? Could be your fan isn't turning on.

Otherwise I also would check the head gasket. Known to happen on the V6

Never power wash a rad. You could do more damage to it.

felt/sound like stalling, could be water/coolant in the cylinder...

Bubbles coming from the reserve tank? Uh..

I would get a leakdown test.. Didn't want to jump the gun on headgasket, but it does sound like one..

Ok i will never power wash my rad again. And yeah all the signs lead to blown head gasket on cylinder no 6. I got quoted at the dealer for 4500$ to fix it.

there's Toyotapro in concord. I haven't been, but I've heard good things. Might try getting an estimate from them?

Never overheated. But for 135k or 145k it has never been serviced and or changed. I changed it back in 2015 so for 10 years it still has the same coolant and water pump
