Overheating after head gaskets

Did you replace the head bolts when you replaced the head gaskets?

If you did will you replace them again since they may be considered

stretched after torquing and some heat cycles.

The head bolts are not torque to yield.
The FSM says "If any bolt is broken or deformed, replace it."
and if while torquing them "If any of the cylinder head bolts does not meet the torque specification, replace the cylinder head bolt."

Finished re-doing the head gaskets.


Went on a couple test drives.
Coolant temp steady @ ~180-190° with 170° thermostat on my twisty mountain roads

2000 SR5.
I bought it cheap because it needed a head gasket. Bought a HG kit off of Ebay like a doofus. The head gaskets in the kit were new old stock I think, but not great quality and not labeled left/right, just a Toyota part number on the clear plastic sleeve (which was a legit part number, just an old one/outdated). MLS gasket but had the blue outlines around all the ports and cylinders. I researched the part numbers and figured out which one was left/right. I guess someone goofed up and switched them before packing because they were not correct. I had all the symptoms described in this thread, overheating after extensive air bleeding. Finally decided to tear it apart and low and behold... they were installed, by me, incorrectly.

I ordered the correct head gaskets from my local Toyota dealer and picked them up 2 days later. Yesterday I took the day off work and redid the job, correctly this time, taking my time and getting it done right. About 10 hours of my time (much quicker the second time around). Started right up, bled the air (no spill funnel) and went for a long drive. Never got above 182 degrees, confirmed with my OBD2 reader.

So happy to have genuine Toyota HG's on there. Runs great. 280k miles.
