Taking out the t-stat, and the engine running hotter is one of those myths that's been around since forever, probably 5 minutes after the first liquid to air radiator was installed into the automobile. The idea that the coolant flows so fast that it doesn't pickup heat in the block, and can't dump it's heat at the radiator is nonsense. This is like saying if you turn on the hot water faucet in your kitchen at the highest flow rate possible, that it would heat up the metal faucet slower than if you had a slower flow rate of water coming out.
Basically for a given amount of coolant, the slower rate of flow will remove more heat (up to a point), BUT, the higher flow makes up for this by cooling a greater mass of coolant. The greater flow of mass makes up for less time in the radiator and you end up removing the same number of BTUs from the engine.
Also, I do have some "field experience" with this.
When I was in college, I had a Monte Carlo that at one point had the t-stat stuck closed. I took the t-stat out and ran it for quite a while. I can't remember if I ever put a t-stat back in before I eventually sold that car to a metal salvage facility. Point is, with no t-stat, I never had an issue with it running hot, whether on the freeway or in the city. It always took forever to warm up, and in the city it would occasionally get up to operating temp. On the freeway it would only run 1/3 of the way up the temp gauge (1/2 was operating temp).
I have been working as a tech since I was 15years old. iam now 44. so yes I have seen a lot of vehicles overheating due to this. yes you can take it out and drive with very little issues. never said you couldn't. yes I have done this too. 160 degrees is what it closes:bat: at so it can swap out the coolant from the motor to the radiator.the 160 degree is not the operating temp of ot bike.just liike the one for your 4r is 180 or 190 it runs hotter than tahat
so why have a thermostat? its not a myth I have seen many cars and trucks over heating due to stuck open or no tstat. if what you are saying is true why do professioal race teams. run them. all my 1/4 mile drag cars had to run tstat if not they would over.if ididnt run one at all at higher rpm 7200 the coolant would cavatate in the radiator from moving ti fast.

nobody told him to take it out it was just suggested that it might be stuck open and to ck it. then the comments started 1: this don't sound right.2: because its not 3: nope.... great comments by the way.. by the way like I said before done hijacking this thread. been great conversating about all this. enjoyed it..hope I didn't make anyone mad..

However this notion that the OP taking his out will cause overheating is just silly. The opposite will happen.
