Hey Yall!
here is the situation, left earlier today on our way to portland and washington from the Bay Area with the 4runner and the offroad trailer in tow. 600 mile journey in total for today.
at around 200 miles in redding, calif i pulled off the freeway to get some gas (ambient temp was 95 degrees) a mile down the road i notice the Temp Gauge has spiked to the "H" i quickly turn left on a side street and park, i pull out the owners manual under overheating and the manual suggest to run the engine (if not overheated yet and no steam) at 1500 RPM for a few minutes to cool the engine down, so i do and the engine quickly cools down to operating temp. i then proceed to the toyota dealer which is right down the street. i decide to pickup some coolant, a thermostat and a radiator cap to do the easy fixes first, they didnt have a radiator cap in stock. (FYI i havent changed the thermostat in probably 7 years and over 100k miles.) i then get on my way (i didnt change the thermostat at that time, i bought it just in case the symptoms continue and i need to do it down the line)
anywho so after leaving the toyota dealer we head to a wendys for some grub and the temp rises again, so i stick in neutral and run the engine at 1500 rpm and it cools down.
we then get on our way to the freeway and get going, i literally then have a blowout of my rear tire (BFG MT) but we will cover that on another thread.
we proceed the remaining 400 miles to portland up interstate 5 and here is what i noticed.
according to the scangage 2
average water temp ranges from 195 to 215 during hill climbs and freeway driving, on long downhills the temp will rise then i pump the brakes and the rpm rises and brings the temp back down (when i say it rises, it was to about 225 to 235 before i braked)
when i would pull off for gas, the temp would spike at stop signs before i revved the engine
NO Check Engine light, no codes so i think i caught it all before anything bad happened. we are now in portland and i have a whole 2 weeks ahead of us so i need to fix this issue, luckily i brought along some tools (basic tools) so i can swap out the thermostat in the morning and see if that does it.
can anyone shed light on what you thin may be the issue? maybe a fan clutch?
