Overheating problems

I have a 1990 4runnet with the V6 in it. I can drive it all day and have no issues. I can drive on the local interstate all day no problems. But I get anywhere where I run 70 or above for long distances then I have problems. Seems like if I keep the rpms under 3000 I have no issues but if it goes above that it will run hot. I can slow down and it will cool off pretty quickly. Well usually. I am posting this while broke down on the side of the road. It was doing great at doing 70 then it overheated again. This time it got so hot it shut off. I don't understand why 3000 is the magic number?

Maybe the water pump or termostat are starting to go...is any coolant dripping from the water pump? Maybe radiator needs flushing? Maybe try adding a different fan...does it still have the fan shroud? Good luck.

Ok update. Water pump came apart destroying the timing belt.

have you fixed your 4runner? if so what kind of water pump did you replace it with?

mine had a problem like this and it ended up being the radiator having a small pin hole and not letting it hold the 13 psi and would cause it to heat up, now that i have replaced it no issues.

New radiator fixed the issue. I pulled the his and there was a ton of crap in the antifreeze. I just bought a new one and replace it. It fixed the issue.

A bad radiator cap , not holding pressure, can cause symptoms like this too.

Should also be noted that letting the 3vze overheat is ASKING for a blown headgasket. Must keep these motors cool.

I have a 95 3.0 I'm having a problem with mine running hot. i can let it idle and its fine. i can drive about 30 min or so and then it starts to heat up. are there any symptoms for a water pump going out?
