overheating

been having a few problems with my 89 22RE. left it sitting for 2 months. when i came home and got it started, the idle was pulsing, going slightly up and down on it's own. then the a/c went, blower works it's just not cold. then the main problem is it started overheating. i replaced the thermostat and it seemed fine for a few days. then yesterday after driving for about an hour i stopped and a small puddle of coolant showed up toward the rear of the engine. filled up the coolant, drove it a few more times after letting it cool down and the overheating just got worse. i was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to start.... thanks

There is a possibility that the compressor has started to seize up, and that caused the idle problem, as well as the AC not working. I don't believe that this could also be a problem with the overheating.

The overheating could be anything from a clogged hose, bad water pump, or a blown head gasket.
 
Could be... What color is your oil on the dipstick, and is there any thick white goo on the underside of your oil filler cap?
 
There are several places coolant can leak from the rear of the engine. If you have a leak, you need to start there first.

When my rad was cracked I think it was letting in air which was causing it to run hotter than it was supposed to. I could smell coolant but never find the leak. Once I did a tstat (180 degree not 195 like they try to sell you), did a new pressure cap, water pump and then finally the rad things have been as good as when the truck was new. I even had a bad pinging problem for over a year that was fixed when I did the water pump and rad.

Autozone sells the Ready Rads that have copper tanks instead of plastic for $114.

Find your leak and if it still does it do a new rad and water pump. It's cheap insurance.

Remember, you only get to run the engine hot one time before it's going to need major work. You have an iron block and an aluminum head.
 
Well I just had the engine rebuilt and even after.. Blown head gasket ... THE V6 radiator for some reason is almost 3 inches taller then the 4 cyl even though they go in the same engine bay. I was trying to find a new option for reducing my cooling issues. The new 4 Cyl radiator is now a 3 core instead of a two.. all of my problems started just by wanting a/c... On a plus not I only have about 30 miles on the truck since rebuild and the a/c runs cold and it is staying cool now. but for some reason now the first heating cycle it gets about 2/3 high on the temp gauce and then drops back to a third and does not climb back up. I also just got finished readjusting the valve chatter. You would have thought I was driving a semi. I also put in a flex pipe on the exhuast to get rid of the ball pivot.
 
thank you guys for all the help... no white goo on the filler cap, oil seems to be normal color. when i got home today there was another puddle at the rear of the engine after sitting all night which seems odd. it was 105 here today and if it was there yesterday you'd think it would have evaporated by now. couldn't see any obvious leaks, just some water gathered on the front of the trans and on the u joint. found one hose coming down from firewall that wasn't connected to anything, running down like an overflow tube or something, i'm by no means an expert so wasn't sure if this was normal or if it should be connected somewhere. and the water didn't seem to be coming from that area.... thanks again!
 
Is it an oil puddle, or a coolant puddle?

If it's coolant, I had a Jeep where the water pump started to go bad, and the coolant was leaking internally. The water pump had a drain hole where the coolant was leaking from, causing the engine to overheat.

It had taken quite a bit of searching to find the problem.


What you need to figgure out, is if the coolant is leaking and causing the overheating, or if the overheating is causing the radiator to boil over and leak.
 
not looking good, the water is still leaking after not having driven in 2 days and it appears to be dripping from the rear of the oil pan. the oil level seems high and a little watery. was about to do a water pump but if the water is leaking from the oil pan i guess i'm screwed huh?
