Overlanding Vlog Series in our 4Runner

So, it's been sort of a crazy week. Forgot to post up here Vlog 31, our first real day at Expo West.

I'm actually working on Vlog 32, day two of Expo west as we speak, so that'll be live tomorrow or Monday!

Ok so... This is a good question.

I am NOT a student of film, an experienced movie maker, nor do I have a lot of experience editing or storytelling. Additionally, I'm not actually very creative, I struggle big-time with the creative process, and I don't have near the creative talent of those that I draw inspiration from.

But what I'm trying to do is tell the story of our adventures, our progression, our experiences - and telling you that story requires more than just showing you. It requires some narrative.

Think about when you watch a movie, whether fiction or not, watch it, think about the content you're seeing. Most of the time, it will be a blend of dialogue and visual accented by music to assist with the emotion.

That's what I'm attempting to do. And if it seems all out of balance, which it obviously does for you, then I haven't gotten that blend right - which is a very strong indication of my lack of experience and creative talent.

So, that's not intended as a slight on myself, but just a reality of where I am with my skillset in this. This is all hobby/fun for me, I have a day job and a family. I'll get better over time, I promise! This is why I'm doing this, the process of growing, learning, exercising my brain - it drives all of this.

Its all good and again, was more an observation instead of a criticism. I agree with the benefits of a narrative as that's what makes it interesting. It was the constant need for selfies while talking which I'm trying to get use to. And again, not just you as its a popular trend.

Here's another keep on keepin' on vote. It's a vlog, a video journal, about your and your family's experiences, not just the scenery. It's your story and putting yourself in frame makes it more familiar and personable rather than being presented by an invisible narrator, which would be much less engaging and would hide the quirky charm and character.

EP 31 was cool... gotta say though, I did not enjoy all the quick cuts. Especially with all those rigs being shown - they all have so much going on that I wanted more time to take in everything.

I like what you're doing. In fact, it is the only VLOG series I watch on YouTube.

I will agree with one of the posters below though that taking a bit more time reviewing the individual rigs at Overland Expo would have been welcome.

Am I right that you didn't love the experience there? I've been thinking about going to Overland Expo East but the vibe I was reading off of you was that you were a little underwhelmed? Too commercial?

I think it's just a matter of preference on the narration. I personally like the selfie video narratives with the kids and stuff in the background. I know that for the Expedition Overland series, a lot of folks hated the voice-overs.

A mix of both is fine. The only time I think I'd really prefer voice-over to selfie shots is when you need to add some narrative and you're already in the editing process. I'd prefer that to talking to the camera in your editing room.

First time I have come across your Vlog- Absolutely love the editing, commentary, personalized perspective, scenes with your family, and information. You give great overviews, and add nice visuals and the ability to cram HUGE events into a very efficient timeline. I am a filmmaker, and appreciate your perspective and time put into this. Many people do not understand, but 1 minute of footage is typically 60-minutes of time to produce. I appreciate your passion, and willingness to put this out to us. Thank you!

I have been meaning to post some praise since your earliest vlog episodes. I am actually about a month or two behind in watching them!

I really enjoy your presentation style I can appreciate all the work that you put into every segment. Sure you can’t meet everyone’s ideal but your content and technique work great for my tastes.

Having sat through your entire series with the kids (as much as they would) in the last few days I will add my praise to your series. Regardless of mine or any other opinion here, on IG or elsewhere your children will have you forever in these vlogs. I will never have enough to give, if it were even possible, to have 5 minutes of my father doing what you are doing for them in recording the adventures you are on. Bravo for that.

My opinion though... I am quite entertained, even by your not vlogs, and very educated throughout.

My request... walk us around your rig, and not just the big mods (Do you have spacers on the tires? One side view GoPro shot seemed like the tires were out a bit) but the little things. You have been across the country with all your kids, how are you managing the little things, as well as your ipod, phone and camera mounts. How do you like that upper storage net? Get in the way of rear views? My kids are younger and that looks like a genius idea. Since Overlanding is all about the journey as much as the destination, what about the 4Runner makes it work best with three kids for 12 hours haha.

Man thanks. And this is great feedback!! I've been thinking about these little things lately. Been thinking about all the little details that everyone might be curious about. I'll start adding that in!!

I really need to do a rig walk around. Like it's super overdue. I shot it once and a bunch of stuff changed. So now i need to redo.

That's what I heard too!! I was camping with the turtleback guys and ended up feeling a little isolated because of it. I mean, don't mean to sound like I'm complaining, love those guys. I just didn't really get to see any buddies that were in the camp area.

I hear ya. And I'm sorry. I had an idea when I was shooting it. And the result ended up being too fast. I've got some different ideas for expo east.

Am I right that you didn't love the experience there? I've been thinking about going to Overland Expo East but the vibe I was reading off of you was that you were a little underwhelmed? Too commercial?

I hear ya. Yea. Definitely going to approach expo east a little differently. After experiencing expo west, I'm going to come up with a better game plan on how to attack it.

I've been to a zillion conferences. Love them. But a new one is always difficult to enjoy the first time because you're getting your bearings. I felt rushed the whole time because I wanted to take it all in. It's just how I am the first time I do something like this.

First time I went on a cruise i practically had an anxiety attack just to get off the boat. I felt like there was a whole world out there waiting for me and it couldn't come fast enough! Haha. Now when we go, I'm like meh. Haha.

I did enjoy it and I've already registered for expo east.
