Oversized Oil Filter

I've been searching around and have been finding conflicting things about which filter to get, specifically when it comes to the Mobile 1 brand.

When getting the oversized Mobile 1 filter, which part number is it?

M1-205
or
M1-209

How much larger are those filters compared to the normally specified filter and what were those filters originally for? I've been using Toyota V8 oil filters, they're the same diameter as the 6-cylinder ones but a tad longer.

According to Mobil1's website, the Toyota V8 styles are:
Mobil 1 Model M1102
Champion Model PH2835
Fram Model PH3614
Fram Model TG3614
Fram Model XG3614

The only oil filter you need is the OEM Toyota filter.

It is superior to those aftermarket filters.

The idea that 3rd party venders like FRAM sell a superior product is a baseless myth designed to help those vendors sell filters by convincing people the Toyota part isn't good enough.

Sadly it often works.

I've seen a FRAM vs OEM oil filter cut open and wow ... go with the OEM part. Those aftermarket filters often have far less filter paper (more profit for them) than OEM specs.

This might not be true for every vendor but it is a common theme. It is how they make money.

BTW, you can buy real OEM Toyota parts online for about 25% less than dealer retail.

Agreed 100%

M1-209. Amazon was having them on sale for $8 each with free shipping. Great oil filter.

In agreeing with Brian, I'd never put a Fram on my ride. I saw one internally implode and starve the engine of oil. Terrible filtering media.

To disagree with Brian, I'd use the Mobil over the Toyota any old day. Better filtering media. That said, I'd don't know who makes the new TRD oil filter (I think it is modeled after the K&N via Champion Labs, but don't quote me on such). If you want the creme of the crop, the OEM Nippon Denso Japanese filter is some wicked filtering media. Some CA Toyo dealer can get them for $20+ each.

not only that, but there are pressure valves, or springs inside a oil filter that are set for a optimal oil temp and presure, after market ones are often not within spec. as quality control is out the window

I am well aware of the fact that Fram makes some of the worst filters (oil and air) known to man. Usually anything coated in orange is so you stay away, and I think that rule holds true with their products.

When it comes to the Mobile filters, M1-105(same size, spec, etc as the the factory filter), and M1-209 are identically in every way, except the 209 is longer with something like 40-50% more filter media.

I usually am a firm believer in OEM parts only, but I feel Mobile 1 makes a quality trust worthy oil filter. I have been using the factory sized oil filter from Mobile, but I wanted to see if a bigger filter would have any effect on the oil quality between changes.

I've been using NAPA Gold Wix filters in everything from tractors to BMW's for 30 years, including every change on my 160k '99 4Runner since new. I have never had an engine problem due to an oil bathed part failure on probably 30 cars I have taken care of. Most of those ran well into the 100k miles and some 200k+. Wix consistently gets good reviews in trade press and on BITOG.

I won't say they are better, but I see no reason to change. The NAPA 1516 is an oversize that fits the V6, which I use at a 6500mi. OCI on full synthetic. My Blackstone UOA's say I could go longer. So don't tell me I should drive 20 miles to a stealer when I have a NAPA around the corner where I also can get filters for the three other machines I currently maintain ('66 IH 140 tractor, '99 BMW 323iC, '08 Hyundai Accent).

It is M1-209.

Mobil filters are made by Champion Labs. They make good filters.

People over-think oil filters at times. Most people don't even know what filter they have, nor do they usually care, but their cars run fine.

I do personally use OEM filters though since I have OCD. lol. Specifically part number 90915-YZZD1. An even better filter than that is part number 90915-20004. Dealers used those back in the day and I'm pretty sure all 3rd Gen's rolled off the line with those filters. They were phased out in 2004 I believe and not sold through dealers. There is a guy on IH8MUD who imports them from Japan but they are $$$.

What convinced me is a display stand at my local Toyota parts department showing a FRAM and OEM both cut open so you can see the insides ...

WoW! The FRAM looked like it had 25% of the paper density. Combine that with the fact that FRAM at your local Autozone is really not that much cheaper than OEM.

I've never seen the inside of a Mobile-1 filter but I don't buy into the theory of "we do it better than Toyota".

The way I see it, even if Mobile-1 made a better filter you have to ask better than what? Is there something wrong with OEM? Some kind of failure to prevent?

That is where the debate is. I don't have the know-how to say for sure so I just use OEM :)

Heres a thread that I've got bookmarked for every time I think of a new oil filter.... Shows a pretty good breakdown of alot of filters, but it only investigates aftermarket oil filters and doesn't say anything about any style OEM filter. But it is pic-heavy which is always good.

Oil Filters - Dissected - Chrysler 300C Forum: 300C & SRT8 Forums

I read this post from the C300 Forum and found it interesting that the OP didn't actually compare against GM's stock oil filter. Is there something I'm missing here, why assume any of them are superior and not test the OEM?

I have a motorcraft filter on mine right now. I work at a ford dealer and get a decent deal on them so that is what I will run until I feel otherwise.

No your not missing anything, they left the stock oil filters out. But if anyone really wanted to compare the aftermarket filters shown to the OEM filter they could just Google it and I'm sure a picture of a dissected stock filter would show up.

I have always used the OEM filters and Mobil1 in all of my vehicles, for many, many years. I work for the company that makes the oil, so I am biased. I have never tried our filters, I just read they are made by Champion Labs, I am going to ask our local lubrication engineer about this.

I'm willing to bet that Toyota doesn't make their filters and they are made in the same place as aftermarket filters. It's an oil filter folks and just like anything else, buy quality and you'll be ok.
