Oversized Oil Filter

Brandon, for the price you're paying for a mobil-1, I believe you can get the same performance for less money out of a puralator or wix filter, which is what I ran after getting tired of paying a premium for Mobil 1. Now I use oem Toyota, because it's cheaper and more convenient being close to a parts man that supports the community.

What is the part # for the longer OEM filter that's the same length?

The dealer's been giving me YZZG2s (which apparently are interchangeable) but I switched to synthetic and want to extend my OCIs to about 7500mi.

I'd rather make that extension on a larger filter.
 
Ok, since op's question has been answered and we're on the topic of filters, here's a question I have:

Back when I used fram I noticed that my t4r and my wife's Mazda 3 use the exact same fram filter. Now that I'm using oem Toyota, does anyone see a problem with me using the Toyota filter on the Mazda 3 as well?

I just came upon this thread, as I plan on doing an oil change this week, corresponding with my rack guide replacement (since I have the crash plates off!) This list will be printed and placed in the front of my manual/log book!

The link to the filter review was also very enlightening! I'm using FRAM XG now but it's time to change that, I think. I've used WIX in the past but being in CANADA, I've found that access to these filters isn't consistent, ie Amazon.ca shows Mobil 1 UNAVAILABLE! Stores don't always carry consist brands or always have them in stock. After I choose, my problem will be finding a consistent source, aside from buying a 10-pack on-line...$$

My wife has the 2.3 mazda 3 which came with a canister and cartridge style filter. I don't like them so I bought the spin on filter mount and now use the same filters for the Mazda, my Taco and the 4runner.

I just threw a purolator on mine during my oil change because, yes, it was on sale. Glad I did not spring for the Fram "high mileage" one though, after reading some of the comments on here! Next time I am in Dallas visiting family I'm just going to swing by Toyota of Dallas for their Saturday special: 5 quarts of Toyota oil, OEM filter and drain gasket for $16.

wow wish my local dealer did that
however, next oil change switching to amsoil and the bigger Toyota filter listed above but getting the filters on a big order ( suspension parts) so the above filter (90915YZZD3 ) is only 389 each....gonna order a 4

Has anyone done a cost comparison between synthetic and bigger filters and longer change intervals vs regular oil/filter/intervals?

Correction to this chart:

Amsoil EAO57 is not available, it has change to EA15K51 for stock. EA034 is still in production.

I can get Amsoil, Wix or Mann filters all day long and ship to Canada also. Check me out in the vendor section, PM for T4R pricing.

Well, setting the OCI at 11,318 only for Amsoil and 4,777 for everybody else in the cost analysis is what is known as 'stacking the deck'. Also the cost numbers are not at all in line for those oils available at Wal-Mart in 5-quart jugs. It certainly would have changed the numbers. I run SuperTech at 7,500 OCI and Blackstone says I could go quite a bit more. At $23/5qts. SuperTech comes out well under the Amsoil cost since I drive under 9k per year. It's also too bad they didn't test SuperTech, but the Blackstone results are enough for me.

Red Line High Performance Motor Oil is $11.95/qt x 5qts = $59.75 x 2.37 = $141.61 (difference of $11.85 higher than your chart)

Royal Purple High Performance Motor Oil is $37.18 for 5qts x 2.37 = $88.11 (difference of $28.02 from your chart)

Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic Motor Oil is $22.97 for 5qts x 2.37 = $54.44 (difference of $52.57 from your chart)

not trying to defend amsoil, as I still run dino oil
and I rarely trust any advertiser or company that compares there product to others,
it should be an independent test

however since I am interested in switching to synthetic I did read the whole article, including shear values, evap, etc etc and found all that information interesting

as far as cost

when I read the small print in the amsoil comparison it states that amsoil is good for 25k miles in light duty, not severe duty,
mobil 1 for 15k not severe duty and that mobil 1 does not reecomend 15k in severe duty
and no other intervals listed for other oils
so the test was done at the severe duty interval
which is half of the oci
it states that the avg interval in America is 4800 miles
