It's hard to get good pics due to the contrast with white. They're pretty tight to the body. Maybe 1 inch proud of the doors. My primary concern has normally been door dings... But they've also saved my doors from rocks - an oddly enough some thick ice sheets once too.
If people really want to DIY these PM me and I can get some measurements for the holes on the frame the next time I take my sliders off to re-paint them. They're about due so it'll likely be sometime this summer. Otherwise my suggestion is that there's enough options out there that prices are competitive and you could just buy a nice set and be off to the trails. Or you can just measure yourself. Tape a long piece of heavy paper to the frame rail and poke holes with a pencil. Transfer the locations to your mounting plates and drill em.
Way easier than my 3rd gen that required drilling through the frame rails, using backer plates on the inside, removing the fuel tank, etc. etc.
