P0301 Misfire - Fuel Pump on the Way Out?

Hello everyone, I have a 98 22re 2wd that has been having random/intermittent misfires on cylinder 1 (p0301), and multiple cylinder misfires (p0300, which usually happens in conjunction with p0301. I never just get p0300). The misfires happen at both low and mid rpms(idle to 2500 rpms) and low and high speeds it also idles rough.

So far I replaced the , spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, cylinder 1 fuel injector, fuel filter, pcv valve.

I cleaned maf sensor, throttle body.

Ive checked the egr valve, it does not seem like it is sticking, swapped 1&4 coil pack with 2&3, I have tried carb cleaner/propane vacuum leak test

I am at a loss... can anyone suggest the next best place to look?

1. Sounds like time for a compression test.

2. No such thing as a 98 22re 4Runner. 98 4 cyls 4Runners are the 3RZ-FE.

Ok. Compression test it is.

Thanks for the correction on the engine... I guess that might be good to know in looking stuff up :p

Check your doorjamp sticker for the production year. Most 96-02's also don't have an EGR valve (a few rare ones do) so I bet yours is a 95 if it really does have the 22RE.

The 4 cyl 3RZ-FEs all had EGRs through 2000, the last year. The 6 cyl 5VZ-FEs did not if they were OBDII.('96 and up.)

(The funny little dead end vacuum fittings on the 5VZ-FE throttle body are vestiges of the EGR used on pre-OBDII engines.)

I had a similar experience. Basically did everything you did and still got the 301 code. Although, I never got the 300 code. Here's the thread where we documented everything; lot's of good info here:

Misfire Problem - Could use some help

Hope it doesn't turn out like mine....Good Luck.

So after some quick reading in this thread, I will add a couple more bits of info that I didn't think to add... but IDK, might be important

1. No hesitation on acceleration, and when the misfire happens, I do not notice any difference in the engine running

2. I ohm tested cyl 1 injector before I replaced it, at 22 ohms cold, cyl 2,3,4 were at 15-16 ohms, replaced #1 with autozone special

3. After FI 1 replace, the cel did not come on for ~3 weeks/ 600 miles, then came back with exact same 20-30 mile intervals. Ohm readings now on all of the FIs are 15-16 cold

Man, that sounds awfully familiar. Check that crankshaft for any movement.

I'm not going to elaborate much here because this seems to get ignored repeatedly.

The 3rz has a weakness. It needs periodic valve adjustments as they change with time, particularly the exhausts. You will find little sympathy here as the 3rz is not common in the 4runner and the V6 does not suffer this issue. Google for Tacoma 3rz and you will find plenty of info about this issue.

If you are getting up there in mileage and don't know when/if they were last done it should be on your suspect list, high on the list.

It is FREE and relatively painless (3-4 hours) to pull the valve covers and check. I'd suggest you have a look into this. It is more difficult to adjust them if needed. Pretty sure Tim has a video too.

Good luck.

Would a cylinder 3 misfire cause my 4Runner to not start?
I am getting the code for cylinder 3 misfire. It was running rough, barely accelerating. Now it won’t start.

Not likely. Was the CEL on or was it flashing? If it's flashing that means there's a major engine problem. I got the flashing light of death when my engine failed 500 ft from my house. It was toast!

Have you pulled the spark plug from that cylinder yet? That will tell you a lot about what is going on.

Ohh no! Bad day for ya.I’m expecting that any time I drive it. The cel is on but not flashing. We did pull plug and replace. It was dirty and black. We just replaced these a year ago.

P0301 Misfire - Fuel Pump on the Way Out?

I have a 3RZFE with a P0301 "cylinder 1 misfire" at 200K miles, flashing CEL, which suddenly happened, just today. Turned off and back on the ignition to clear the automatic fuel shutoff, but it happened again right away when starting up the engine the 2nd and 3rd time.

I can hear the poof poof poof misfire in the exhaust sound.

I'm just starting to figure out what it might be. I know enough to check compression and to check/replace/switch the coil packs &/or plug wires &/or plugs, &/or fuel injectors but I didn't think a single cylinder would be affected by the fuel pump being on its way out as this thread suggests.

Can someone give me an idea where the fuel pump is and how difficult it is to check & replace? I doubt it has ever been replaced (nor the fuel filter either).
