I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 1999 4Runner. Its a 3.4l 155k miles and is nice. I'm told that the engine was replaced for a factory issue around 40k miles. Love it!!!
It has a known issue... The engine misfires when started while warm or recently run up to temp.
Once it gets warm the #5 cylinder dies upon restart and the only code kicking out is a P0305 (thanks to the great folks at Woodbury Auto Zone who read my codes for me!!!) . After reading the forums on this issue this is what I've determined. I'd like to fact chack myself before going down the wrong road, or rabbit hole!!!
Spark is coming from the wire to the plug, so it's not the coil. It could be a wire, but that would be less suspect because it does not happen when cold, it is never ever intermittent, it either runs 100% or #5 dies. So it's probably not the wire.
I read that the injector has a relay inside of it. That could be effected by heat and is the odds on favorite to the problem. Has anyone else seen this?
My plan was to carefully tear down the top. and replace the plugs, wires and the #5 injector. It's probably ready for plugs so I figure why not. I could move the injector to another cylinder, but the time involved, is it worth it because I'm probably going to find the injector bad anyway?
Also, speaking of Auto Zone, there are two injectors for this engine availaible. One is $175 and the other one is $40. I've read where folks have used $40 injectors and things worked. But... Are these things any good? Such a disparity in pricing makes me are the rebuilts worth it or will I regret it? Money is an issue, but I don't want to be stupid.
I also noticed that the valve cover was leaking. So I was going to replace the valve cover gaskets and really clean things up. How much more work is it to do the covers once your've got everthing else apart?
Are are there any other "maintenance items" worth replacing while I'm in there? I'd rather not have to do this twice.
Thanks
