P0420 Catalyst Code Bank1?

On my 04 4Runner SE, with 81K, has a check engine light on, the dealership diagnosed it for free and came back with P0420, basically need to replace the driver's side converter. They want over $1000. I just missed the 80K emissions warranty, tried to argue with them that it happened at 78K, with no luck.
My question, can I go to a muffler shop and replace the converter for about $150, or does it have to be a Toyota part to clear the check engine light?

Since you are barely over the mileage, I would ask the dealer to contact Toyota and see if they would "good will" it for you. I have been going to the same dealer for quite some time, and always do the maintenance, and they have taken care of me before. They took care of 15k dollars worth of repairs on my 03 Prius that was out of warranty.

check out a good shop, im sure they can get a toyota cat for you alot cheaper,im not certain, but 150 is way too low unless you can buy it yourself & just have them install it. any time my shop replaced one , it cost about 4-500. good luck

Autozone has cleared mine before. Anyone with an OBD should be able to do it and do it for free.

I would push to have Toyota cover it. It should not have failed. See if you can find a good service department in your area that can help you out to get it good willed.

I just had both mine replaced under warranty at 79k miles and the parts were somewhere around $1800.00 and labor was $200.00.

Does anyone know if it is illegal to put a used one in? I know its illegal to sell a used one in California.

If it's not illegal I'd try and get one with low milage from a junk yard.
