P0770 with no symptoms

Long story short; had my 2WD 02 4Runners transmission rebuilt and upgraded by Import Performance Transmission about 2500 miles ago. Since getting the tranny back in I have gotten a P0770 Shift solenoid E code whenever the transmission goes into lock up around 50-55 MPH. There is no strange noise, the torque converter stays locked up and unlocks as it should. I’ve had tranny techs troubleshoot it over the phone with IPT checking for proper function of the transmission and resistance on the electrical components. We’ve swapped out the solenoid and the fluid is clean and new. I’ve even put stock tires on it to see if it was a speed differential from running bigger tires that was causing the code. Still no joy. Any ideas?

So i guess when it's reset the code comes back?

Did the shop run the diagnostics per the FSM for P0770?

Causes: 1. Shift solenoid valve SL is stuck open or closed 2. Valve body is blocked up or stuck and/or 3. Lock-up clutch

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION The ECM uses the signals from the throttle position sensor, airflow meter and crankshaft position sensor to monitor the engagement condition of the lock-up clutch. Then the ECM compares the engagement condition of the lock-up clutch with the lock-up schedule in the ECM memory to detect mechanical trouble of the shift solenoid valve SL, valve body and torque converter clutch.

Did they check the shift solenoid valve like this: CHECK: (a) Applying 490 kPa (5 kgf/cm2, 71 psi) of compressed air, check that the solenoid valve does not leak air. (b) When battery voltage is supplied to the shift solenoid valve, check that the solenoid valve opens. Then comes the DI175 tests for the valve body and finally the torque clutch.

The FSM is essential in diagnosing. Do you have access to one? :cowboy:

Warranty claim. They messed something up when they were in there.

Of course though, in the pursuit of performance things sometimes go wrong. I, for example, and replacing my engine because I wanted to try aftermarket cams. Was fun until the engine blew.

This is great info! Thanks for such a thorough reply. I do not have access to an FSM.

We’re you able to resolve the problem? I have the same issue. I had my transmission rebuilt 2 months ago and it already burned once. I got a replacement second time p0700 code they replaced the sensors and now the p0770 is back

P0770 and P0500

I experienced a symptom where I got stuck in a high gear and when I came to a stop, the car stalled. It has happened intermittently over the past 2 months. As of recent, my Speedo stopped working and my dashboard is full of lights (!brake, ABS, VSC, CEL). OBD throwing P0770 and P0500.

Are they related? Does the stall give a clue to the cause of the P0770? Hoping it’s not a torque converter but would love for the experts here to weigh in.

Thanks!

Mostly coming to a stop sign and stull is a sign of the TC going bad. Especially if it's acting like a manual thst you didn't push the clutch in before stopping. :(

We shall see what other members think. :)

Ouch, if true. Would like to hear from others as well. Anyone have an estimate on a torque converter replacement cost?
