2003 V-8 4x4
To resolve a stripped transmission pan plug, I installed a new drain pan this past weekend. Initial startup with the new pan was a bit lower on ATF than I expected; apparently I managed to drain 6 quarts from the trans with the pan drop and sitting overnight. So, she immediately threw a CEL. Ran out of T-IV yesterday (5qt on hand), but resolved the fluid level issue this morning.
Despite getting the level fixed, the rig's in limp mode with 5th locked out and there's a really hard shift in the 2->1 downshift when stopping. The downshift is bad enough that I've taken to shifting to neutral before the 2->1 at 12mph.
Got the code read this afternoon, P0778 - Pressure Control Solenoid #2 (SL2). From the FSM, it appears to be mostly responsible for the 4->5 upshift, hence the fail-safe mode locking out 5th and the torque converter lockup. I don't see an obvious reason for the hard downshift. I disconnected the battery to clear the code (Autozone won't, by policy, in case you were wondering), but CEL returns immediately at startup.
So, that's a longwinded way of saying is it doing any harm to drive easy for a couple of days until I can get a new SL2 installed?
TIA.
