I keep getting a P1130 and P0171. I am about to attempt to relace the sensor. I say attempt because the truck has 160K and is in central NY. (RUST, LOTS OF IT). Anyone have any words of wisdom. ALSO has anyone had this problem and do you know if the AF replaced will cure this problem.

Spray some pb blaster on the nuts and let it sit for a few. I would also get new nuts to put back on. The sensor should come with a gasket too. I had the P0171 come up by itself the other week and cleared it after cleaning my MAF sensor. When I replaced my A/F sensor I got two different codes but can't remember what they were. I would replace the A/F and clean the MAF in your case.

When DTC P0171 is recorded, the actual air-fuel ratio is on the LEAN side. When DTC P0172 is recorded, the actual air-fuel ratio is on the RICH side.
the 0171 is caused by the o2 sensor being bad, so fixing that will solve the 0171 code, and you said you replaced both the o2 sensor and the maf... correct?

I replaced the MAF and the AF senor which is referred to by some as a O2 sensor. I have california emissions and have only two sensors before the two cats and after. I replaced the one before which is the AF/o2 sensor.
I havent replaced the other one cause there was nothing inidcating that malfunction.

Well here is the update. It turns out the ground cable that is bolted to the manifold was loose. It kept setting of the codes.
If anyone has this problem and needs to know where the ground is mounted let me know and I will post a picture.

I am in syracuse and have the same issue and am about to do the same fix- where is the ground???
so I can tell my mechanic when he swaps out the rusted a/f sensor
it was running fine with 2 codes,since I have noticed the cel and had it scanned it has since began to race when I start it
PO replaced o2 rear sensor @110k miles,and MAF sensor @130k miles, now I am new to 4 runner @ 138k and the A/F code is triggered

Ground wire question
Hello Scorpion, I would greatly appreciate a picture or description of the where the ground wire is located. I'm throwing the same codes and would like to check the ground wire before replacing any expensive components. Thanks much if you are able to oblige. Sincerely, sureshot

I know this is an old thread by now beings its from 2008 but i would really appreciate a picture of the ground location. Replaced the o2 sensors because of a different code and now its throwing this one so were trying to explore everything that could be wrong.

Here's an image I found when I searched for "5vz-fe manifold ground location":
I'm not really sure, but I think that bolt with all the wires attached to it near that diagnostic port is probably the one you're looking for?

My 2001 4runner limited is getting this p1130 which is supposed to be the a/f air fuel sensor. I already replaced it with a denso. It's still doing it after driving a bit. I've cleared it 4x now and still comes back on soon after clearing.
I did check that ground you guys said above as well and made sure it was tight.
Is there anything else to check?? It still does smell like it's running rich on gas. Mechanic did do injector cleaning and I got it done at another place a couple weeks after as well. The running rough part is no longer an issue.
Just fyi I had like a bunch of codes last couple months:
-P0171 - replaced maf sensor and a vacuum hose tube that connects to the throttle body. Hasn't come back on yet
-P0304 - cylinder 4 misfire, this caused the 4Runner to run rough like it's revving up and down when stopped or idle. Had mechanic swap the coil pack and this hasn't come back on yet. The spark plugs are denso and newer too. Same with the ngk spark plug wires.
-P0440 and P0446
These used to come on a lot but haven't seen them in a while. I did get the charcoal canister replaced. And gas cap just in case.
Anything else I can do for p1130? Any assistance is appreciated thanks.

Still getting the p1130 (now been the only code after a few months now) is there anything else to replace other than the air fuel sensor?
All other codes were fixed except the p0440 and p0446
