P1135

I have a 2001 toyota 4runner. I am trying to turn off the check engine light so i can get a new inspection sticker. Started with multiple codes, tune up with new plugs and wires, cleaned maf cleared most. I am now faced with p1135 parts guy at dealorship said it is the A/F sensor. Is this a fix that should be done at dealorship or can i do it myself?

You can replace it yourself easily. It's just 2 nuts holding the sensor on the exhaust and a plug that attaches to the sensor. The sensor is before your first (or only) catalytic converter not far from the exhaust manifold on the passenger side. The A/F sensor itself is around $150-$200 iirc. I appreciate your help. Changed it today in about 15minutes. This site has some great info. Before finding the forum a month ago i didn't even know how to change my oil, never had any interest to learn. When i brought it in to get check engine light cleared mechanic gave me an 1600 dollar estimate. I have always hated the fact that i was at their mercy because of my ignorance and decided it was time for a change. I took their estimate and started researching.

Clean MAF
New plugs and Wires
Replace ignition coils
Replace taillight bulb
Replace other Taillight housing
O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1

Unfortunatly started my search at autozone and ended up with bosch plugs. Car started driving perfect for about 2 days then back to same thing. Luckily found this site, tossed the bosch after 3 days replaced with Denso plugs and wires, purchased an ignition coil but also decided to pick up basic code reader to try swapping coils before replacing. Reader was showing Random misfires and misfire in cyl4 so i swapped that coil while installing denso plugs and wires. Problem solved and the purchase of the reader actually saved me money because it was cheaper than the coil that i was able to return. Today i just replaced A/F sensor and finally got all check engine lights off for the first time in 4 months. Ended up spending less than $600 for all quality parts from dealorship and online, code reader and other tools like long ratchet extension set. Even after you factor in the 2 tickets for expired sticker i received while working on the car i still came out way ahead. Thanks to everyone that has posted over the years, ya'll are building a great database that has awesome info that is available to anyone who decides to take the time to look!

Nice work. My problem with mechanics was that I seemed to be a re**** magnet. It was always the dumbest person working on my car and I finally said enough, I'll do it myself. It didn't help that I already knew enough about engine mechanics and body work that I could tell when I was being lied too. FYI, the V6 requires dual electrode spark plugs that do not require a gap setting. I have been running Bosch dual electrode paltinum plugs for over 30k miles without a problem.
