Pads and rotor suggestions?

Who the heck cares about lifetime warranty on a wear item such as brakes? First off that means they care about lasting forever vs stopping. Second, you'll just get a prorated refund on the brakes which will be near nothing. I'd rather change brakes often and have PERFORMANCE.

They stop fine, warranty is agains defects but most local places exchange no questions asked

And I just bring them back and get news ones no question asked

Performance on a SUV lol

Meant to put performance brakes on a SUV is lol especially this one

Just get any part store ceramic pad or up, no need to waste money on PERFORMANCE pads

1) will not stop your SUV any noticeably better unless you shed a lot of weight, the amount of higher coefficient of friction needed to provide performance braking on a vehicle as heavy as ours will not be achieved by changing your brake pads to "performance" pad vs the ones I have mentioned

2) a lot of hard bitting semi metallic pads will warp these front rotors quick

3) dust, squeal, and life of pad

Change to syn brake fluid and metal lines if you want to improve your brakes some more

By real world testing do you mean this?

Choosing the best pad combination for your needs is always critical, but having a complete system is better (ss lines, good brake fluid, etc). For me I like the carbotech pad materials for my truck. In the end with brake components you get what you pay for. I've seen those autozone cheapo rotors wrap within a few months using their pads. In the end there is never a "perfect" pad. My current setup is a TRD pad with centric rotors in addition to my ss lines and dot 4 fluid. And it meets my needs well. For most my setup is extreme.

What does your video prove? The driver in the SUV drives better than those in the sedan? Do you think if was in a sportier car he would have driven even better or are you saying he would not have done as well? A good driver can drive anything a bad driver ....

What does that have to do with your performance Trd pads vs my cheapo Wagners? Will those trds stop a lot better? 20%, 30% 40%? Or is it more like <10%

Oem roots also warp, and so will my cheap wagner ones, only diff is the ones I bought are cheaper and has a lifetime warranty. Centrics make nice rotors, If you want to spend $100+ per, this is my daily driver and if i want something fun to drive fast I got 2 boosted cars in the garage I can jump into :)

I didn't think it made any difference. Pad is a pad and rotor is a rotor. So I would buy cheap stuff and did front pads only. The car stopped just fine. But this time I figured if I'm going to spend my time replacing all bad parts (warped rotors, worn pads and frozen calipers) I might just get performance stuff - so I did. The truck still weights the same but it stops in near half of the distance with less pedal pressure. Trust me it makes a difference.

goohead is 100% correct. Wagner pads will stop your 4runner as good or BETTER then any high-priced pad you can buy. I put performance brake pads right up there with performance spark-plugs.

I don't agree. Think motor sports. You can get iron rotor and ceramic pads and that combo will last a long time (before rotor warps) but will give you less pad grip than carbon metallic pad and carbon racing rotor which wears out after 1 race.

Its called brake fade. Pads designed in oem spec stop fine the 1st time as the limiting factor is the tires. Once you keep braking harder and longer your brake pad will show its weakness. Hence this performance pads shine where you need them. Again why i said there is no perfect pad. Oh thanks for the compliment on my driving skills.

I just had Carbotech put together a set of 1521 pads for the 4 runner. I use their XP10-12 compound pads on my track car (Alcon Calipers & rotors) and have had great luck. I instruct with PCA & ACNA and lots of us use CTS pads. Excellent product or reasonable price

Carbotech Toyota Pad options

Cheap organic or even some cheap semi metallic compounds definitely not stop as well as a parts store Oem replacement ceramic, what do you expect? I specifically said my Wagner thermoquiet ceramic vs a performance pad, I didn't mention the $15 bottom of the barrel pad slaps

Brake fade on the track is way different then an ceramic or decent Oem replacement pad on the street for 1 emergency stop, if you track get a performance pad, but don't get it for everyday driving and tell me you feel the performance different is traffic or freeway driving unless you are racing on the highway in your truck lol

I will concede that performance brakes have a place...but NOT on an SUV in NORMAL driving conditions. Maybe IF you do a lot of towing up and down mountains you MIGHT see a difference.

I worked at an auto parts chain in the bay area called Winchester Auto for a few years after HS and saw a lot of rotors and pads.

I saw some really good quality rotors come from Centric. Their premium line is powder coated (except the braking surface of coarse) which is nice since they dont rust. I never had any of them come back either. Sometimes if you get cheaper rotors they can be warped off the shelf and people will return them. As for more expensive rotors, Brembo is a nice upgrade, but not really necessary.

As for pads, I personally dont like anything ceramic. Yes they will last longer, but at the expense of wearing down your rotors faster. They also give off much more braking dust so its tough trying to keep your wheels clean. Go with something semi-metallic or organic. EBC greenstuff are great for 4x4 and suv's.

i have run wagner thermoquiets before but every time i got out of my car I could smell them, performance wise they worked but i remember getting a few complaints on them when i worked at the store. We sold a lot of the spectra one pads, but i dont even know if that company is still around.

exactly. which is why i am having Carbotech make me a set with the 1521 pad compound. Great street pad, low dust. have them on her honda suv and they work very well.

I loved my carbotech pads when they were on my truck. They were fantastic on both the track and were decently mannered on the street. I just gotta send my old backing plates to them, I just haven't had the time lately.

Ceramics getting more dust than semi metallic and eat rotors faster? I think you got it backwards in OE pads

For performance it depends on the compound

Factory pads / turned factory rotors

At 68,000 miles, replaced mine with factory pads. Bought at a reasonable price from Metro Toyota online - www. toyotapart. com

Toyota Stock parts (prices from 8/2009)
Kit with Front Pads and shims: 04465-YZZ1A-TM $55
Set of Rear Pads:04466-60090 $49
Set of Rear Shims: 04946-30100 $16
Turned my disks at NAPA for $9 each, so $36 total.
For a little north of $150, all was done AND QUIET! Now at 102,000, and they still stop me just fine, with or without my 3000# trailer. Maybe higher performance pads would do better, but I enjoy not hearing a squeal.

A little background: I originally bought premium full ceramics (I think Wagners) and THEY SUCKED!! Those pads squealed like a pig every time I touched the brake. Drove me nuts.

Took them off as soon as the factory pads arrived. Was able to get my money back. This is a good time to note that RockAuto Auto Parts is awesome for customer service. Their customer service has kept me buying from them whenever I need aftermarket parts.

BTW: If anyone advertises "quiet" ceramics, its a lie.

Can't say what the difference is but I'm on my 4th or 5th set of Wagner ceramics between my truck and my Sienna and they have never made any noise, stop just fine and absolutely produce less dust. But I used to only use Toyota pads and they were just fine also, they were double the price though.

Stick with dealer pads. Anything else the best you can hope for is that they perform as good as them. You are not going to have to worry about dust or squeal with them.

+1

I have 77k miles on my '07 SE with the original brakes rotors and pads, both front and rear. My 4Runner has been lifted with 33" tires most of it's life, plus having the added weight of rock sliders, aftermarket skids, etc. and the brakes still perform flawlessly. I don't get any squeaking or vibration with them either. I do my fair share of stop-and-go driving, along with mountain driving so I'm anything but easy on my brakes. At my last alignment, the tech said I had about 40% remaining on my front pads. I could possibly get 100k miles out of my OEM pads.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the Toyota OEM pads and rotors have far exceeded my expectations, so why mess with a good thing?
