Paint Colors

Why is Toyota so afraid of bright vivid colors? What a drab color selection we have to choose from. I will be getting Salsa Red Pearl, but I really think Toyota should call it Old Man Red. I really think a splash of color would be well recieved, people that buy the 4Runner live life, we are not a bunch of old men sitting on a couch. Well maybe some of us are, but i'm not 80 years old with one foot on a bannana peal and the other in a grave.

If I have to in 07 I will buy the salsa red, but I will have it painted bright red before I even put it in my garage. Now that will be a sharp 4runner.

The three most popular colors for people 60 yrs old and up are gray, white, black. The 4runner is offered in 2 shades of grey, that is sad. I am sure grandma and grandpa are excited.

The evening news is where I got the information on the colors old people like.

Toyota (for that matter, any other car manufacturer) has to cater to many different tastes and they've done enough market research to know which colors work. The wild crazy colors are not the hot sellers over time. It's usually the Silver or Black that most people buy.

Oh btw, there is only one Sharp 4Runner around here :D
 
If you're serious about repainting the 4Runner after you buy it, you might as well go get a Lexus. A complete repaint will cost you well beyond the difference in price!

I will be getting the 07 limited. The lexus is 10 thousand more dollars. Paint job will cost $2600. Seems like a lot, but I will be happy, and I will keep it for at least 100,000 miles, so to me it is worth it. I cant be happy with old people colors.

Gee, I guess even though I'm only 26, I must be REALLY old because I love my Galactic Grey :rolleye2:

Get a grip; I love the fact that a vehicle that is this quick and handles as well as it does (for what it is) doesn't catch the eye of local law enforcement. If you want something that catches people's eye, go buy a sports car in a bright color and accept the tickets and other riff-raff that come with that ownership experience. I don't daily drive my Spa Yellow Honda S2000 because it draws WAY too much attention. Have you ever gotten pulled over while sitting still at a red light (by a bike cop, no less)? Something that gets attention can be annoying, sometimes.

Maybe in New Jersey, but not in NY. Did my research, brand new vehicle. prep work is minor. Did the same thing with a corvette, given to me by grandmother. She said she needed a fast car because she might not have all day to get her errands done. Vision got bad, so I got the car, painted a black car bright yellow for under 5 thousand. Needed a little prep work because it had 8000 miles. Looks really deep because it was hand rubbed, they dont do that on any cars I know of except the expensive exotic sports cars.
 
I love my titanium runner. After I detail it - clay, polish, wax, etc. the silver is complemented with the stock 17 silver rims and Valor tip as far as shine goes. I also love how I park it at night in a parking lot and it just gleams as it reflects the ambient night lighting. It produces sharp reflections and well defined contours. I don't know, silver just says "Badass machinery" all over it for me. I always felt that silver emphasizes "machine" for a vehicle as well as accentuating the body styling because you can easily see the styling with silver. Alright, I'll shut the hell up now. :arrow:

You can obviously do whatever you want, but realistically, unless you get a cheap "orange peel" Maaco/Miracle paint job, you're gonna spend upwards of $10,000 or more. Times have changed in the paint/body repair world... I remember getting quotes only 5 years ago for a complete repaint of my 68 Camaro (straight body/no rust) and that was going to cost close to $5k, but recently, the same quote is minimum $10k. There may be a slight difference in price since I live in California, but I would imagine the cost of labor and materials are still going to cost more than $2,600 unless you own the shop or have a close friend that can do it. IMHO, it's not cost effective to repaint a brand new vehicle, unless you were recently featured on MTV Cribs or Unique Whips. I'm perfectly happy with my galactic gray mica, and I turned 26 three weeks ago :D

Same shop that did the vette, told me $2600 if I bring it in directly from the dealer.

I only want a splash of vivid color on my baby. Im very happy with the work they do.

If your happy with the colors Toyota offers great. Im 42 years old and run the Boston marathon and still finish in the top 130 runners. I am a out going person, need some flash, if you love grey I am happy for you. I wish I did, sure would be cheaper.

I looked at the Lexus but chose the 4runner because the back end opens funny and the third row seat is standard and gets in the way of my toys. The 4 runner to me is a better value for the money.

A Yellow XTerra might be more what you're looking for.

Yea think how cool it will be when you open the doors or hood you'll be able to revisit the original color! Just like a Taxi Cab! :D

For $2,600 more than likely a safe bet you will not be getting a 100% of it painted. But I'm sure you will tell us it's included in the price any second now. ;):
 
RickyCRX - The surface area isn't as crucial to the cost as one might think, its mixing the paint and prep for painting that cost the most. If 07Runner thinks prep is minimal, he's in for a really crappy paint job.

I seriously doubt costs are that much lower in upstate NY than the NY Metro area. To get any kind of decent paint job on a car is going to cost a lot of money. If you're ok with the door jams, trunk and engine bay being the original color, then that's a deal. You realize that you'll lower your resale value by thousands by repainting and doing a sh!t job, right?

Make sure you take lots of pics, this should be good for a few laughs at least. I'll be waiting next year when you get your '07.
 
The problem I have with most manufacturers is that they don't do enough with contrasting the exterior and interior colors. Usually with a lot of them you can have any interior you want as long as it's black or grey. I traded a metallic red Explorer on a Titanium 2006 Sport. I could have had red salsa but compared to the Explorer, the red salsa is dull looking. It's more maroon than red. To my taste, one of the best combinations particularly on a sports car is silver exterior and bright red interior. Corvettes like that are dynamite. Love my titanium but couldn't find a bright red leather interior option in the catalog. Instead, I've made due with some small tasteful orange-red flames behind the lettering on the front door. Thinking about removing the black fender stripes and replacing with thin orange-red striping to match flames. I guess I was inspired by the original "The In-laws" movie with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin. Arkin's the middle-aged dentist whose BMW 7series gets hijacked and accidentally run through a paint shop. It emerges from the other end of the shop with Arkin screaming "Flames! My car has flames!" Yep, always wanted a car with flames and always wanted one with a supercharger. Lets see, where did I put that TRD catalog?
 
I don't know about bright vivid colors, but I for one definitely think Toyota needs to update it's color offerings for both the exterior and interior.
 
Just a couple of random thoughts -
1) Yeah, I agree, the red is way too maroon. Just think how nice that red they use on the Tacomas would look.... Very sporty.

2) Maybe the original poster would consider a two-tone look by painting the cladding? This makes the painting question much, much simpler, and would give it a unique and sporty look. I think the 4th gens really need a two-tone option ('03 plastic cladding doesn't count).

Wait a minute -- I like the cladding on the 2003 models!! :D Thanks to the cladding, it's the only 4Runner in town that looks like mine (there are 2 other titanium metallic with the gray cladding, one an SR5 without spoiler and a Sport Edition). I figure that if it's ever stolen, it will be easy to find.

OK, now back to the subject at hand.... :)
