Paint Help

I have a black 1999 that I am looking to get the paint to "pop" again. From reading a bunch of threads here, I am pretty sure I have single stage paint but there are a couple spots above my back windows that look like there is clear coat that is damaged. Anybody have any idea what couple be causing this?

It's like this on both sides.

I wish but doubt it. It's not something that is stuck on but rather parts of the finish that are gone/worn off. Acid rain can cause that. :cowboy:

That's your clear coat missing. Not a single stage paint, unfortunately. I believe the red, black and green colors all have a clear coat. Maybe the white, hard to tell though. Desert dune is single stage though :)

There's no way to fix bad clear except for a new paint job. But certainly a good cleaner wax buffed on will go a long way for the rest of the paint. If you want to get rid of those small hairline scratches a polishing compound like from Meguiar's works fantastic.

How muh of your clear is actually damaged? Just that one spot? How bad is the rest of the truck. Mo Pics?

The black 4Runners are not single stage. They all have clear and sometimes it peels. Wherever on the truck your clear is not peeling well it actually might be pretty repairable.

Pic a spot that isn’t peeling ... like 1/2 your hood and do following: (YES it will help)

Buy:
Meguires compond
Meguires wax (any type, I like Tech Wax)

By hand (no polisher):
* Apply compound rub a single swirling long pass say 3 sec per 6”-10” and go across whole 1/2 hood. Wipe off before it dries. Don’t let the compound dry. Youtube has instructions
* Apply coat of wax and remove

There are more detailed ways to restore paint. Posted above is just the quick and easy way to see whats possible. Also in my thread you will find a couple of before and after results of doing paint restore.

I think you're a little off here. You need to be more specific about the colors.
There are three Reds. Cardinal & Radiant Red I believe are single stage. The Sunfire Pearl def has a clear coat because they look like crap on everyone I see.

Desert Dune def has a clear coat. One of the best because they all look good still. I had a my rear hatch, a door & Sport hood painted. (maybe I'm wrong because I see touch up paint in single stage & 2 stage) I know my repairs were clear coated.

There were 2 Greens, Evergreen Pearl & Imperial Jade Mica , both with clear coats.

There were two Whites, Natural White which is a single stage & Golden Pearl I think was a 2 stage.

There were a lot of colors over the years, check out this chart.
