Paint or powdercoat sliders?

I spoke with Bud this afternoon and my sliders will be done in the next two days. I am at a loss as to if I should paint or powder coat them. Odds of them actually sliding on the rocks are slim as I stay in trails that are normally not that technical, so chips probably won't be an issue. It seems to me that the headache of repainting them once a year will only piss me off so powder coat may be better for me. What are your opinions?

Had powdercoat on my old rig, got paint on my new one. Even if you dont slide around rocks on em, they get chipped from rocks and crap in the road. My advise, you can touch up paint, but cant reeeally touch up powdercoat without it looking like crap. A good paint job looks just as good as powdercoat.Take your time, get a 6 pack of PBR and wipe the sliders down with acetone, scuff em with scotch brite, wipe again, prime with some self etching primer (I like the rustoleum stuff), then spray with some paint, I would recommend some sort of textured paint as opposed to simply satin, matte, or gloss paint. Budd will recommend the same.

I talked to Bud about this same thing when I got mine from him. Plus, you save enough money by painting em yourself to buy a lifetime supply of paint. :hatsoff:

I used Rustoleum's spray on truck bed liner. Worked excellent, still looks great 6 months later, touched em up one time after a long off road trip.

Have you looked into POR15 paint? I don't have any personal experience with it but it seems to be touted as the best of both - extremely durable yet gives the ability to touch-up. I am sure somebody here who has used it or a little more research will give you a better idea if its a viable option for you....

I think POR15, and similar products, are supposed to get a top coat of regular paint to protect from UV rays.

I sprayed em on a nice hot day so the coating stuck real well and dried fast. It sprays on pretty heavy and I did have one run, but I let it dry and sanded it out and re-sprayed. The nice thing about textured paint is it hides your touch ups, you screw it up, no worries! Just hit it with some scotch brite and re-spray.

I believe I used about 1.5 cans per slider. I bought 4 and still have a full can on my shelf. That stuff is tough as all hell. It almost looks identical to the powder coat that Gobi uses on their racks.

You said it sprays heavy, so only a couple coats? Around $5 a can right, so $20 in spray liner. Damn that makes me want to just powdercoat them for $89 and not spend the time, but if it is going to chip all up then I am only prolonging the inevitable.
 
I painted my sliders and bumpers with rattle can bed liner and I'd recommend it. The Dupli-color Bed Armor and the Rustoleum Truck Bed Coating gave near identical results. PC looks great and is easier to have done, but chipped powder coating looks like @ss.

I would consider tractor paint with an industriul primer. Be careful putting it on though. It is very thick and likes to run.
 
I've ordered sliders from Shrockworks, but I was wondering what was the best rust protection for those. Since our roads are salted 6 months a year, rust is a big problem.

Should I go with bare-metal sliders, glossy PC, or textured PC?
