Paint Oxidation

The paint on my mirrors and hood scoop insert is very oxidized. I went to a few body shops and was told it would be about $500.:wow2:

I need some ideas. I'm thinking of trying gloss black on them but am not sure how it would look. Has anyone had them repainted to match the factory color or painted them yourself a different color?

It looks like you have clearcoat failure, not oxidation. If you don't garage your truck, the souther CA sun will destroy the clearcoat. I've been told it can happen even if you care for the paint regularly.

It happened on my 3rd gen and it's happening all over my 4th gen. The proper way to fix it is to sand it and have it a new clear coat applied. When I had my roof fixed, they charged me about $500, so your quote could be fair.

You could try to spray paint for your mirrors, but you may end up with a larger mess than you started with. Good luck and let us know what you try.

Same. It sucks. My fenders are all fading on my 2004....;(

The same thing is happening to mine. The clear coat on my roof is peeling like my skin when I get badly sunburnt. It makes me so mad to see it happen, I've never had a problem on my other vehicles.

My hood scoop looked the same. Used plasti-dip to cover it up. Really can't tell its black next to the galactic gray.

I second that notion. I have a white 4Runner; and my hood scoop and rear hatch flap with the Toyota emblem were pretty bad. If you take time and prepare properly, plastidip can look nice and clean. If you go this route use at least 5 coats. Just my .02 :juggle:

Just wondering here. How long have you owned the Runner? Have you ever applied Wax to it?? Or did you buy it with this condition.

My 03's paint is awesome. Black too. Of course I wax it every 3 months.

I see plenty of cars on the road with this condition. The owners have never waxed their cars.
