Well I am about to turn 30 and going this coming Saturday for the first time ever, Paintball.

Well I have a few questions, and please be honest.

How bad does it hurt? I used to train in kickboxing, and I figured if I can handle that, how bad can it be.

Outfit, well I was never the camaflouge type, so that's out. Not going to buy it, unless I really get into this and do it regularly. However, I got suggestions, and came up with the following. Tan Timerline hiking boots (already broken in), black sweat pants, bring a t-shirt but wear a long sleave shirt for you want to expose the least amount of skin, and a baseball hat wear backwards to help protect the back of the neck. Oh how could I forget: a cup.

As far as how much it hurts, it isn't terrible, but it just stings a little, on bare skin. Clothing-wise, just wear loose fitting clothes, to absorb any impact of the balls. If you are going to be doing paintball in a woods setting, camo is a must, just for coverage, but if you are in wharehouse, the pattern does matter as much. Have a good time & Happy Birthday!
 
Ahhh, this is perfect bro. I'm an AVID paintballer. I've been playing for about a year now and I have all my own stuff so feel free to ask me anything.

It doesn't hurt that bad. Just wear at least two layers and you'll be fine. Wear a long sleeve because you'll probably be in the woods so it helps to protect your arms from bushes, thorns, rocks etc. Knee pads if you have them, you'll be kneeling alot or crawling. You said you aren't buying anythiing, but buy a CUP if you don't already have one. Getting hit in your twig and berries is not fun, especially if this is your first time.

Never take your goggles off during play. If the refs have thier goggles on, you better have yours on too. You do not want to get shot in the eye...

They'll be something to block the barrels on your paintgun (also referred to as a marker), keep that on the barrel at all times unless the refs tell you to take it off right before the start of a game.

Paintball is a team game. If you want to be Rambo, you'll get shot up quickly. If you see the bad guys, yell out to your teammates because they might not see them. Give cover fire for your teammates if they move up. Ask for cover fire if you want to move to another bunker or tree.

Thanks guys...I am really psyched about this and my b-day. I think the wife is going to get me an XM radio but not sure. As far as the paintball: well it's like the many other things I have tried, I do it at least once, and then see from there. I lasted on motorcycle riding for about 4 years, then I gave that up. So this might be a one time thing, or I might do it regularly. Either way, at this point even though many suggest a camo, I am not going to get one for the main reason this may just be a one time thing. As far as a cup goes, I have one for my days back in kickboxing. But this is not like your everyday protector that you can find in any sports store. This cup really works. I couldn't tell you guys how many times I took hits there, and it did not even phase me. Well wish me luck: I hope to get a few people before they ever get me. I used to be a sharp shooter with a BB gun: used to staple gun GI Joes to logs, and shoot off pieces of their buddies one by one without missing. But the difference between that and this is that I have not shot anything in years, and with the BB gun I took my time.
 
Just a fair warning. The ballistics of paintballs compared to BBs and bullets are completely different. Paintballs have an effective range of 75-100 feet. Anything more and it may not break unless it hits a hard object like your mask or your gun.

You'll also have to arc the paintballs to hit far objects. I hope you have a good time man. I remember my first time with fondness. The next week I went and bought my own gear. I've played for about a year but have already gone through 4 different guns.
 
So your warning is basically saying that shoot within a good range: it does not have the distance of BB's. Good to know.

I was looking at guns: some nice ones (from a birds eye view) were $100. Then this really nice one, but it was $1200.
 
Yup, you got it man. A lot of people get excited when they see guys strolling through and shoot too early. They miss and then the guys are alerted. If you just wait a few more seconds and let the guys get closer, it'll be much easier to hit them.

Yeah there are a wide variety of guns to choose from and suit different price ranges.

Some good low cost ones are ones made by Air Gun Designs, Kingman Spyder, PMI Piranha and Tippmann. Stay away from guns made by Brass Eagle. I personally like the AGD line, great customer service and very reliable and maintenance free.

LMAO....I was checking out the forums in www.paintball.com and the one thing I see said a lot is, "This gun sucks man, get a Brass Eagle"...LMAO. Someone says that is a Walmart gun. Regardless I am a long way off for buying a gun if at all. Thanks for all the info. I will post next how it went.

I think they said that only because both are headquartered in the same town in northwest Arkansas.
 
Shoot first ask questions later ;)

Just wear some protective gear (goggles must, and atleast some cool outfit w/ whoever you're with. stay away from jeans cuz it just takes the fun away from the game).

Enjoy yourself and just make sure you stretch out prior to running like mad! Also give the benefit of the doubt on surprise attacks in close quarters by making them surrender. Sux to be shot at 5 feet ;(

Just follow someone's lead and you'll figure it out quickly how to play. You'll be like a child again in no time :50cal:
 
haha, yeah you want to stay away from the Brass Eagle Walmart gun. I think it's called the Talon. It's made out of plastic!!!

My tourney team had a code word we used when one of our markers went down during a game. We yelled out "Brass Eagle!" and we all knew we were down one gun during the game and had to compensate for that. Thankfully we never had to actually use the code during a tournament.

My field doesn't have a surrender rule, although you should offer it up as a courtesy. I asked this kid to surrender once and he turned around and pointed his barrel at me. It was either him or me, so he took a walk towards the deadbox...

Pack some bengay because at the end of the day you'll be sore. I didn't realize how much exercise it was. First you're carrying this 7lb gun with you all day. You're running, jumping, crawling and diving. When it's all done, you'll want to take a looooooong hot shower...
 
This is a trivial question but I was thinking that obviously I will be in the woods wearing clothes not meant to keep things in it's pockets. What do you guys do about your wallet and keys?
 
I don't carry my wallet around. I usually leave that in the 4Runner. As for keys, I carry around a backpack that holds towels, spray bottles and extra paintballs so I leave my keys in there. I don't worry about it getting stolen as I've never had that problem or know anyone that had that problem. My field also has some lockers you can use. So I've known guys who bring a gym lock and use that to hold all thier stuff.

I've carried my keys around and place them in a pocket that has velcro closure. Velcro is the best...
 
Well I did it, and it was a BLAST!!!!!!!!

I kicked ass for the most part, but excelled so well on the first game of capture the flag, people on both teams were like, "WHO IS THAT GUY???"

Anyway, it was fun, and those things hurt man. Now I have that itch for a gun I am trying to control: if I don't my wife will have my head on a platter. Well talk to you guys later.
 
Glad you had a good time man! I knew you would without a doubt. I played today as well and had a great time, like always.

Both good guns man. The Tippmann is used by a lot of fields for rentals because they are very reliable and workhorses. I personally like the Kingman line of guns because they are easier to work on and every bit as reliable.

The Tippmann body is a clamshell design. You have to open it up a certain way or all the internals will just fall out of it. Also there are a couple of screws you have to remove to open up the chasis.

The Kingman markers are designed to be easily field strippable. There is one pin you have to pull out and you have easy access to all the internals.

I wouldn't suggest the Shutter though. It's an older design since it's using a powerfeed. Powerfeed angles the hopper to the left or right of the gun. Look into one that has vertical feed. Vertical feed has the hopper sitting directly on top of the gun and feeds the balls a little faster. If you want to get electronic you can get a Spyder Imagine. It's capable of 13bps, has full auto, burst modes and semi.

The most important equipment though is a good mask. If you can try the mask on before you buy I would suggest going that route. Try to find a local paintball shop.
