Painting brown Clinometer shell Gray.

I scored a complete clinometer/altimeter unit with bracket and hardware for a $118 bucks -but its shell is brown and I have a gray interior. I know duplicolor sells interior spray paints, but I was wondering if anyones been down the road of spraying interior parts and knew of a close color match.

I was just going to wash it down with se True Bond, and paint it with whatever interior paint seemed closest to the gray thats in my 89 otherwise.

I would think any color of gray would be a better match than brown lol
I dunno about how accurate the colors are but I have used that interior paint on things like dashboards and seats and it bonds really well.

You probably want the darker of these grays.

I've seen three Toyota grays. One very light gray (I've seen in some DLX trucks with vinyl floors), one medium gray (probably your headliner, rear view mirror, roof of your camper top, etc), and one dark gray (dash, console, arm rests, etc).

SEM made a match for the medium gray that's been recently discontinued, but you can still find it.

The darker gray in my link is a known close match for the Toyota dark gray.

Some of the parts are cast in the color, and some of the parts (the dash frame for instance) are cast in another color, and are painted. Both my red dash and the gray replacement dash I bought both are brown/tan plastic with paint on them.

If you need some reference images for what parts were what color, just reply. I've got some saved on my laptop for when I start painting.

Great post, I was looking at the truck pillars gauge mounts but they only come in black. So I was looking into the closest match to the Toyota gray. Please post your results.

The SEM color # 17303 blue/gray is too light. I think you want the 17313. I used Duplicolor Graphite Gray on several parts. It seems to be a good match in person but a little off in pictures. This door pocket was blue before I painted it.

Great info guys thanks. Ill try some of these numbers. It doesn't need to be an exact match as its not a blending job, Im just painting the shell so it should work.

I see that SEM 17013 is the dark color gray match, but you said you used duplicator graphite gray? Was that a vinyl paint or interior paint color? Do you still have the code because when I search for it I only get exterior paints. Thanks.

D'oh!! I just dug out the cans and I gave the wrong color name. I used Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric paint #HVP111. It is CHARCOAL gray not GRAPHITE. Sorry. The can lid looks dark but the color is a good match. I tried the SEM light blue/gray and the only part of my 1st gen it matches is the lighter part of two tone vinyl door panels. Since most people have cloth panels they probably don't have a use for it. I think some of the newer Toyotas , like 2nd gens might use the blue/gray. Duplicolor is available at my local Autozone and Advance Auto. I had to order the SEM so I was pretty disappointed.

Is the clinometer shell a hard plastic or is it a vinyl wrapped piece?

If its hard plastic (like the A pillars or anything else inside besides the dash and doors) then Rustoleums Charcoal Gray spray paint enamel is a perfect match. I brought a plastic trim piece in, sprayed a spot on it and it dried to a near rxact match.

The 1st Gens tend to have two tones of gray inside.

The higher end SR5 models I saved pics of have darker gray up about dash level, and the medium tone toyota blue/gray above that in the headliner area.

For instance, the kick panels are molded in dark gray, the rear view is molded in the lighter toyota blue/gray. Rear cargo panels are dark, but the bolt covers for the removable top are light.

Pic for ref. The A pillar covers are dark, then meet the medium gray headliner which also matches the plastic bits up there. The SEM 17303 Toyota blue/gray is a match for that medium color. The 17013 FMC Zuea Black is a "match" for the dark gray that would be close for the dash/inclinometer cover. I haven't yet tested it myself, but the thread on yotatech Nervo pointed me to months ago had me pretty convinced it would be the best I could find.

Thanks for all the information guys. I couldn't really get a hold of the SEM colors, and I found that online for $20 wasn't reasonable.

I wound up using Duplicolor "Charcoal Gray", which wound up being a perfect match. The cap did not look like it would be, but the results are near perfect. Thanks to NERVO19 to suggesting it. It was cheap, available, and looks nice.

Here is a pic of the can for all you who may need it in the future. I have the darkest gray interior on a loaded SR5 1989 4Runner. You can see in the pictures easilyy that the cap does noot represent the results well at all.

Okay, here it is installed. I got a decent deal on this Clinometer but I wish it was the black faced one that says "TOYOTA 4WD". Thats porn to me. Anyway haha:

It's a pretty good match huh? That color "Charcoal Gray" should be available at most all Autozone locations right on the shelf. I think it ran me about $8.95 or something like that. Gave the hood about 3 coats and the results are better than I expected. I would of settled on the gray being relatively close, but this is about as close as it gets.
