Painting chrome bumpers? step it

My front bumper was showing some rust, so I purchased a new black on from ebay. spray painted it body color. And I gotta say it looks amazing ! and its holding up great after a few weeks.

Now i'd like to make my rear bumper match, but I dont want to buy a new bumper. Id like to just paint my chrome one.

My question is for those who painted their chrome bumpers, how are they holding up ?

I found some people online that said it wont last . but Ive a few guys on here have done it.

Good looking truck. I agree a painted rear bumper would look great. However, I hear that painting a chrome bumper doesn't hold up, as good as it would look painted, it'll look like sh*t with the paint flaking off. Buy a new bumper, do it once and do it right.

Spray the chrome with airplane "paint" stripper (get it at any auto parts store) and the chrome will come right off down to bare metal..Clean it good, prime and paint...

I thought Aircraft stripper only removed chrome paint? Not chrome plating... If it will take the chrome off my bumpers that would be awesome!

Airplane paint stripper will remove just about Anything.. just make sure you get it ALL off before painting again.. All the chrome has to come off as well. (Otherwise it will flake, because the stripper gets digested by the chrome layer and will work over time.) I'd suggest throwing it on per the instructions.. then sanding, priming, and painting as you would with anything else.

Are you sure about this , I though the chrome was not removeable like paint.

I never thought it would strip chrome but it's pretty f'n awesome if it does. I would make sure not to get it on my hands if it can do all that though.

I've used a grinder and removed some of the chrome from my bumper when I bedlined it. It was more work than I had time so I didn't do the whole thing.

That chrome is only a thin layer less than a mm thick. Your bumper has plenty of steel under that to hold its shape and will hold up fine.

Google "paint chrome wheels". I think the key is the self-etching primer.
Basically,
1

Sand the chrome wheels with a dual-action sander, using 80-grit sandpaper. This takes the shiny chrome finish off the wheel. Paint does not stick to chrome so the shiny surface must be removed.

Use the sandpaper with your hand to get into any small areas where the dual-action sander won't reach.
3

Wipe the wheels down with a wax and grease remover. This removes any dust or grease left on the wheel and allows the primer and paint to adhere evenly to the wheel.
4

Spray self-etching primer on the wheel. Get the primer into every crack and cover the entire surface of the wheel. Automotive primer and paint won't stick to anything but the self-etching primer, so make sure the coverage is even and complete. Allow the primer to dry completely.

Apply the automotive primer to the wheel, on top of the self-etching primer. The automotive primer provides a base for the paint to adhere. It also fills the small scratches made by the sandpaper. Allow the primer to dry completely.

Cover the entire wheel with automotive paint. Make light, even coats with the paint so that there are no runs or drips. Paint three or four coats, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.. Allow the wheels to dry before mounting tires on them or putting them on a vehicle.

Have you actually tried this? I think that there is a chemical agent for stripping chrome but it is NOT typical paint stripper, despite airplane strength.


I found this via Google:

The chrome is removable relatively quickly (but not without hazard) with muriatic acid. But, if such wheels are actually nickel plated and then chrome plated, and most of what you are looking at is actually nickel.

It may be possible to sandblast them, but sandblasting is not good for aluminum and you'll never get it smooth again. Chemically stripping the nickel requires special chemicals that aren't easily available to or usable by consumers.

I chose to sand down my rear bumper and paint it. Instructions below:

Thanks that looks promising , I gotta look into removal but Im gona bet my bolts are too rusty to make it a easy task . Might leave mine on aswell.
