Painting Flares, Cladding and Bumpers

Ever since I got my 00 I have disliked the tan (Topaz Metallic) cladding, flares and bumpers. It just doesn't look right with a red 4runner and I have thinking about painting them. Ideally I would like to get them professionally done to look OEM, but $500+ for paint is not worth it. I have also thrown around the idea of getting 96-98 Limited flares and cladding in the dark grey color, but that would leave my bumpers a different color. I plan on getting a new front bumper this winter, but the rear may stay stock for a while.

If I paint it myself I will probably just use Rustoleum Bedliner spray or possibly a flat/satin black. Here are some pictures of what it may look like.

IMO, your truck would look awesome without the running boards and Sunfire red flares.

Another idea... you can always remove the door cladding and bumpers, have them paint matched to Sunfire, then do the flares black. Black does look awesome on Sunfire.

Well the sport hood is sitting in my garage just staring at me. I haven't found a good price to paint it, so it sits...:violin:

Yeah I could turn my 00 into a 02 sport. I have the 02 grill already and a sport hood, but I really like the black contrast. Also I don't want to look like 4runit too much.

Obviously he has Bushwacker flares, is an SR5 (No Cladding) and is much heavier modded.

If you do the cladding in black, you'll probably want to repaint your wheels as well. I tried to photoshop something to see how it might look with the black cladding and silver wheels, but alas, my meager skills were not up to the task. In my mind though, it doesn't look quite right. I'm also not really a fan of black bedliner on Sunfire. I'm not sure why, but the contrast between gloss and flat/textured paint is especially glaring with the red. Normally, black on red is a pretty cool combo, so maybe a glossy black would work better. It could also have something to do with the darker tint to the Sunfire - it's not a pure, screaming red.

I think the cladding and flares would look pretty awesome color-matched though. An all-Sunfire runner would be cool. The wheels could stay silver with that.

You can paint the flares yourself, just exercise good paint taping.

My suggestion is not to use Rustolium, it is the BOTTOM of the barrel as far as paints go. Go to an Automotive paint store and buy some really good spray in a can. I know many people use the Rustolium but I think if you want the paint to last then you should go with real Automotive paint.

Haha, it's even better in person. He has built quite the 4runner and just graduated high school. Slaps my 87 4runner I had in high school in the face.

Yeah I have thought about painting myself, but worried I will mess it up. The Rustoleum bed liner is very forgiving, unlike other paints. Wish I had a picture of the rims I painted on my 2nd gen. Not the greatest. I have heard nothing but great reviews of the Rustoleum bed liner, but negative reviews of the Rustoleum spray paint. I figure I can run the bed liner for 1+ years and then get a professional job later down the road. I just don't know if the bed liner will come off easy enough or just ruin everything.

BTW COB, the running boards are staying till I can get the sliders on or clear some room in my garage. They drive me crazy everyday.

I will be updating my build thread this week with a full section on painting. I previously started a separate thread on painting bumpers but I will include even more detail on my build thread.

That said, matching paint to factory as pictured on red 4Runner above NEEDS to be done by a professional. But if you are going for a 2 tone look then you can probably do it yourself and make it look quite good.

If you are using Rustolium it will probably look bad within 6 months of the paint job. Rustolium is not designed for Automotive usage; it is not an automotive grade paint.

I know this is an old post but Im hoping the original posters are still alive! LOL I just got me a 2000 runner in red pearl and I'm super stoked. Ive been searching far and low to get a clean 5sp runner and I finally found her!

Just wondering if there's a build thread for that modded runner? Love that truck!
