Painting Hood with Duplicolor

Getting ready to finish up a project I started a while back (Is someone going to buy a Green Sport Hood if I get one tomorrow? Central Texas) now that I am going to have some free time. I'm wondering if anyone has ever had any success on painting a large piece such as this with the Duplicolor color matched rattle cans (Dupli-Color BTY1603 Dark Green Mica Toyota Exact-Match Automotive Paint - 8 oz. Aerosol). Obviously, preparation is going to be the biggest chore. I'm wondering if it's worth the effort if in the end the paint doesn't match well. Thinking about adding a nice black racing stripe too, so I'll need to work on my masking and wet sanding skills.

I don't know how well it would come out on a large flat piece like the hood. Might want to look into how much a cheaper body shop would charge to paint it like Maaco.

That's what I've been considering. I've just heard and read horror stories about how crappy a place like maaco ends up painting stuff. I was thinking maybe $500 to get it done is reasonable, but then found the color matching duplicolor rattle cans and thought diy'n might get better results. Maybe if I prep it and then have them spray it, I'd get better results? Most things I've heard about maaco is that they do little to no prepping.

There is that guy in Denver with his military like build, he painted his with a spray can, looks ok. Can't remember his handle.

Paint on a hood should run 2-300 at a small body shop. I've been quoted as low as 175$.

Rattle can will never be a proper way to paint a large panel. Duplicolor is not what you need to be using if you insist on doing so as well.

I actually went that same route and painted my sport hood silver with clearcoat; all duplicolor oem paint. The reason i went this route was because all the quotes i got were around 300 and i bought the hood for only 75! It didnt turn out too bad but i have plenty of experience with rattle cans. I used about 3-4 cans of primer, 6-8 cans of the base coat, and 8 cans of clearcoat. If you feel confident about your skills go for it!

just have a body shop do it. like others said, it will probly be around 200. once you buy all the primer, paint, clear, wet sand paper, compound, etc you will probly be almost half way to that 200. I painted the hard top on my old miata and really took my time and wet sanded, prepped, etc. and it still didnt come out good. it was ok because the car was a piece of junk but id just get it done by a pro

The main thing to remember when raddle canning is to avoid tiger stripping. It takes a lot of time. You need to do fine mist coats. It will take 3-4 coats before you even start to get full coverage. The more time you take the better. If you need to wet sand than do it and do some more coats.

But like people said, if you want it perfect, its better to a shop or even a Maaco job because after supplies, time wasted you could have just spend the money to have it done right.

If you want someone experienced to do it but need to save some $$, check craigslist. You can usually find bodyshop guys doing side gigs or retirement gigs on the cheap. Be sure to check references though.

Definitely don't use duplicolor spray paint on a hood. You won't be able to make it look right. And it will not last. I used to be a professional painter, and I've also done a lot with spray paint. It's really difficult to make clear coat from a spray can look good. And it takes forever to cure unless you can bake it. Literally weeks afterward it will still be very easy to scratch. And of the brands I've expiremented with, duplicolor is the worst imo.

As mentioned above, I would recommend Craigslist. You can find someone with a good set up in their garage who know whats hes doing. Have it done right the first time with good urethane based paint and clear

Just as it says it can be done. I did my whole paint job with rattle can. In the end, I'm not really sure it was worth it, but it was fun and it definitely is unique. As for painting a hood to match? I probably wouldn't be willing to tackle that personally. The hood is the only spot on my 4Runner that I'm not real happy with. It's broad and hard to paint. Here's my before and after.

I'm happy with it, but I am not sure id do a hood. Just throwing it out there. I would probably look on CL to have someone paint it.
