Painting mud flaps

I've had a lot of free time lately as I'm on vacation so I've been trying to knock out stuff I normally wouldn't have time to mess with. A buddy and I are getting together tomorrow to work on his super duty and I planned on doing a few things as well. My mud flaps look rough so I figured I'd touch them up. Couldn't find anything with a search, has anyone done this? I was either going to go with standard black or possibly spray bed liner to give them a textured look that might actually stand up to being hit with debris etc. Anyone have any input?

I repainted all my flares and mud flaps with Krylon Fusion gloss black. It's made for plastics, and has a little flexibility in it so the paint won't chip off when the flap moves. It's been over a year and a few off road excursions and still looks good. I've got some pics in my build thread.

Are your mud flaps raw black plastic/vinyl and if so, do you ever use those armor-all type surface protectants on it? If you do that religiously, I think it eventually soaks into the plastic making it impossible to achieve proper adhesion when trying to paint it down the road.

Are you just looking to renew it back to the factory fresh look? Those black plastic trim restorer liquids you find in the auto parts stores might be a better bet

yeah they're regular black plastic, no armor-all on them, they're getting gray/chalky so I figured it was time to freshen them up. I thought about "restoring" them but wanted to see what others had tried as far as painting. I will probably end up using spray bed liner. Textured and tougher than paint etc. No more worrying about them plus I haven't seen anyone do it yet so I'll guinea pig.

I know I've seen Escalades and or Denalis with body color painted mud flaps. But that would be a more expensive way.

I painted my mud flaps about 5 months ago. I removed them, then I throughly washed them to make sure there wasn't any dirt left. Next I used Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer Spray then Rust-Oleum Trim & Bumper Black Paint, both of which I got at Walmart. The job was really easy, and it really makes my truck look newer.

I painted the rear plastic step area of my '00's rear bumper with this over a year ago. It still looks great. It is not glossy; it looks more like it did new.

It's about $6 at Autozone or Advance Auto.
