i know most of you dont have this problem, but for those who sympathize with me...

my dad told me the other day that im not allowed to mod my 4Runner...=[ (not in those exact terms, but you catch my drift)

so pretty much the only thing i can do right now is get new tires (size bigger - 265/75/16's) and maybe remove my running boards...

anybody got any ideas on how to convince him to let me get a lift and maybe a few other things? all i want is a 3" toytec and maybe like a grille guard or shrockworks bumper...

all of this would be my own money, he just calls it "a waste" and refuses to let me use my money on it.

he says "i didnt buy you that truck for you to put stuff on..."

anybody out there got some advice?

don't feel bad, my dad wouldnt let me get 22s on mine at first he said he didnt want me having that "look" of a truck. so i decided to just make mine into an off-road looking one instead. since i got all the cosmetic stuff on there, i wanted a lift and tires. when i asked about the lift (like you i would be paying everything myself) he said no that i didn't need to lift it that it was "fine as it is now"

i might can talk him into 99 4WD coils but i want a daystar lift...good luck with your dad. from the sound of it yours sounds like mine

Well, being a parent myself I have to empathize with him. I see a side that he is just protecting your monetary welfare. If I were in your dad's shoes I would also be more focused in spending money more consciously. Now I'm not saying that modding your truck would be wrong at all. However, if I used my hard earned parental cash on a vehicle for my offspring, I would expect he or she to play by my rules. That's just something we all have to live with at some point in our lives. You know the usual schpeel - "as long as I buy you this, live in my house, blah, blah, my rules". He is just looking out for you, you may not believe it, but I think so. I myself would try to teach my kids the value of hard earned dollars and not to squander it on depreciating assets for the time being. I myself will have to buy another car for my older teenager in two more years and will give her the same speech.

As far as modding the truck, see if you can compromise. Offer to pay for the insurance or maintenance. Perhaps when he sees that you are committed to help him with the cost of ownership he will bend a little more and let you do more to the truck. I was also at your point when I was younger. Then I moved out, got married, bought a house, bought two trucks, and do whatever the hell I want to them. Just be patient and consider yourself in a fortunate position to have such a great ride. Ok, enough of my parental bumper sticker proverbs, I'll shut up now and get back to playing Call of Duty 4. :p

Looks like you need to hit the trails hard and start breaking stuff (or try to) to convince your dad those mods are worthwhile. It might help to tell him the stuff you want to do is bolt on and can be reversed and sold when you get rid of the truck

I am a parent and I rember my dad telling me the same thing but then I did exactly what was said above take responisabilty for the things he is right now and then he will see that you are not going to destroy it. Pay for the Ins, Miantance or maby pay him for the vehicle.

You will see when you grow up have kids own a house and you still want to play with cars they will still be there. So maby your best bet is to work on getting to that point.

i doubt if he starts going off-road and breaking stuff it would just prove his dads point more then his..

breaking stuff is not the way to go. He is just going to be more pissed that he has to spend money on repairs. My dad feels the same way about how "its a waste of money" but my mom didnt seem to care as long as it was my money and stuff... so she must have talked to him and convinced him somehow... maybe try talking to your mom? however since he paid for the car he kind of should have the last word on the mods... Now that im 18 my parents still pay for insurance but i pay for all maintenance on the vehicle, and any mods i want to do. So when i go 4 wheeling im a lot more careful about damaging my car.

Well did he give you the vehicle, or did you pay for it? Because if it was given to you, you may want to give him the benefit of the doubt, and show him you appreciate the vehicle. He may feel like you aren't grateful for it, if all you want to do is change things on it.

EDIT: I just read that he bought it for you, so I would strongly advise this.

Also, you can try proposing that you will put $$ away in a savings account if he lets you spend some on your truck. Sort of a spend a little, save a little system.

Obviously by my list, my mom doesn't care what I do to my truck. She thinks it's kind of cool, because I've done it all with my own money. Then again I paid for half of the truck itself though.

Just start saving money. Eventually he will give in and let you mod the truck. Then you might have a good chunk of change to spend on mods.

I only wish my parents would have bought me a vehicle... I went through my grandmother to buy mine. It was my uncle's runner but he got into some trouble and she ended up with it. I bought mine for 6 grand from her. I got a job when i turned 14, found someone to drop me off and pick me up. by the time i turned 16 i had saved around 1500 bucks to put as a "down payment" on my truck to my parents. (the truck is in their name cause I wasn't old enough to put my name on the title) I pay them 100 bucks a month, and as long as I pay them every month the truck is mine. I pay for maint, mods, gas, and the truck itself... They tell me that if it breaks I fix it, or I walk... End of story...

So I say be grateful you don't have to pay for the truck first, and respect his wishes... Try the save/spend thing... Sounds like a good idea to me, good luck man :bigok:

wow, thanks guys, i never expected so much help...

really, i think his problem is the offroading. every time i mention it, he says, "thats not what i bought that truck for." i think he's just afraid i'm gonna break it...

even when i mention that some land-owners don't care, or charge a small fee to wheel on their land, he still says no.

any way ya'll think i could show him that wheeling is not such a bad thing?

Take him with you, he may enjoy bonding with his son.

about the off-road thing i know what you mean, my dad dosent want me wheeling it cause he thinks i will break it. it was the real reason why i got the 2WD 4runner over an F150 4x4. he said i wouldnt be able to take it into mud then and it would cost less if anything ever did break in it since it wouldnt be 4 wheel drive.

but like kregg said be glad he got it for you. i'm only responsible for gas in mine. i get a good student discount on insurance and even with that i would hate to have to pay for insurance or the monthly payments.

if he want let you lift or anything you could always do like what i did. getting a grille guard and removing your running boards is always better then nothin man.
