I thought about putting the mic in the vent, but decided against it because I didn't want to have to turn off the heat or A/C especially on a marathon conference call. I ran mine up the a-pillar and out in that space between the sun visor and the map light. It was very easy to run there and you can't see it.

Anyways here are some pics so you have an idea what you are getting into. Routing the wire is pretty self explanatory since it is such a small wire, but here are some pics or how to get the vent off and how i integrated the mic.

Here is the vent with the panel off. The foam on the end is not normally there.

The screw driver pointing to one of the tabs. There are two tabs in the back as well that are a little tricky to get to. The port pulls off the back once all the tabs are free.

And here is how i ran the wire out the back and taped on some foam so the air doesnt get out.

Also i decided to block off the air vent hole right next to the mic with epoxy on the back. I left the other two open so i still get air to my window for defrost, but it cut down on the air noise to the mic and now its hardly noticeable for the other person on the phone.

Also here is the HU after a little tweaking of the mounting. The install kit doesnt work perfectly but it is probably as close as any kit will get. It helps to bend those plastic sides in before putting them on so they fit tight against the sides of the new head unit.

haha ya i had the day off so i was playin around with a few things and tweaking the mounting of the head unit a little more, until i got about 6 of those beers down and things started looking progressively worse:beer:. Cheers

As noted in my earlier post; I just installed a Kenwood HU and that is exactly what I did. I soldered the parking brake wire to the ground wire and that was it. The system works fine and all functions are available to the operator regardless of vehicle speed.

I'm just offering it as something to trial before spending any extra money.

I think the after market HU's are that simple to bypass intentionally. They don't tell you how to do it but they don't make it difficult. They are less interested in CYA maneuvers than the auto manufacturers. I had a Scion HU (SNS 200) that would have required me to build a pulse generating circuit in order to bypass the lockouts. (refer to JA's site for a detailed how-to: Toyota 4Runner Factory Navigation Override and Unblock Bypass Module)

The pioneers definitely need a relay. They will not work with simply a grounded wire, the radio checks the signal after it turns on. If it's already grounded it won't sense that the parking brake is applied as it needs to operate.

Good to know, I know with my pioneer, it needed the relay because there was a delay and if it was grounded right off the bat it wouldn't work, it needed that couple seconds of boot up before the trigger switched the relay for the bypass to work.

No relay needed for my AVIC-Z130BT. Just moved one of the pins up in the harness, then grounded the mute, parking brake wire, and ground together. Also just ordered both the Y-adapter and the smaller adapter for $8.95 shipped from Tigerdirect.com

Yup! The AVIC's speed sensor can be bypassed as you mention above. The AVH's look for a parking brake set. Bummer, but not too bad I suppose. I'm actually going to try soldering up a micro-relay today to see if I can do it and get it to work.

Yeah, I was helping my buddy put his hu in last night and definitely knocked a few whiskey and ginger ales down. arty:

We mounted his mic to the steering wheel, but I'm not really crazy about that location

Did you order the same parts for the 4400 that the OP ordered for his HU? I'm trying to figure out everything that I need to make it work in my Runner, and it says different things wherever I look. So far it looks like I need the HU, the multi-dash kit from Amazon, wire harness from Amazon, Metra wheel control, brake bypass, and iPhone interface cable (CD-IU201V?) Hopefully that checks.

Driving home for Thanksgiving and I'm hoping to get this bad boy ordered and in as soon as I can.

Hello, I have been reading your post and are very helpful, but I got some trouble here. I have a 2003 4runner Limited with RDS JBL sound system and I wanted to change the stereo head unit.
I already bought a double din PIONEER FHX700BT and its "specific" harness and dash kit. I had no problem with the dash kit, but when I plug the harness, the RCA cables and the wiring to the brand new stereo I only receive electricity (the stereo turns on) but it doesnt send the signal to the amplifier or speakers I am not sure.
This is the harness, dash kit i bought.

(Im not interested in the adapter for wheel control or the Y adapter for the antenna, I only want the head unit to send the signal)

There is a light blue wire that has to be run from the new head unit, to the amp. (Power wire) Did you run that along with the RCA cables?

ft8a, Did you get yours working? I too am connecting a Pioneer headunit to a JBl/4TH GEN 4RUNNER. I have problems. Mine plays for a bit, then sound stops, then power cycles on/off, then off. I can not find any bad connections. I have NOT used the blue/white wire coming from the Pioneer. I tried connecting to the blue wire on the Metra harness but that caused a very strange problem. When I turned on seat heaters, the radio went off!

Anyway, any guidance or ideas welcome. I'm suspecting bad receiver, bad TATO, or not having the blue/white wire in the proper location is causing the JBL amp to loose signal?

I know this is an old post, but needed some info. I purchased an 08 urban runner used with an aftermarket dvd/Nav Radio which is getting spotty reception. I opened up the dash to look at the install, but don't see a second antenna lead. Did all 4runners have 2 antennas? If not, is there a different procedure for getting better reception?

I'm going to keep this going a little. Lots of good info already here but I've got a couple questions I didn't see the answer to. Just picked this up today probably going in next weekend.

It has a wire coming off the harness saying steering wheel remote. Does this mean the controls on the wheel will work, or do I need to get aftermarket controls? Is the relay required? By which I mean, do all controls lock out, or just a few? Anything I should be aware of so I can do this in one try?

You need to buy an ads-msw module to retain swc. The blue/yellow wire is how the radio talks to that module. Are you sure that's the right dash kit? Some T4r trims take the 95-8210. Have a picture of your dash?

i am working on mine right now the 8210 is the proper trim ring you will need. with a motorized face you may need to do some trimming.

question for you guys that have done the install. i have everything wired up on the tyto-01 i have a black-white wire left over on the 20pin side there is no mention of this in the install manual anyone know what or if it is needed?

and anyone questioning the 2 antennas you will definitely need adaptors that they talk about earlier in the thread
