Parts/Mods from Dealer questions

Folks-
I purchased a 5th Gen SR5 Black back in December and love it. I've been waiting, lurking, contemplating suttle mods for the last several months. One thing I would like to do is dechrome by changing out the chrome fog lamp covers for the gray and the rear badge plate to the black background like the TE or 4cyl. Never done this before but can I just go to Toyota dealer parts dept and order these? I spoke with a guy at one dealership and he talked like it was near impossible and if the vin# didn't match up with the parts I couldn't get them. Sounded like a bunch a Bee Ess to me. Also, will put Steelcraft nerf bars on soon unless there something better out there. Any comments??:shrug:

How mechanically inclined are you? The reason I ask is because I took my chrome one off to paint it and it wasn't exactly a day at the beach. Took me a good 3-4 hours figuring it out and cussing along the way.

You have to take the inside panels off the rear lift gate to get to the bolts/nuts/clips that hold it on and it's sealed in clear plastic to prevent moisture from getting in there.Make sure it's sealed back up good as water will rust the rear wndow motor and arms. I have a Limited with nav/camera so had to undo alot of wiring but you should only have the license plate light.
TIP:undo the wiring bundles inside the liftgate so you have more room to unplug the wires when you get the nuts off.Also.. tape off all around it on the outside as the bolts on the garnish are sharp and will scratch the paint.

Thanks Harper 7. I'm not mechanically inclined and WILL cuss a lot. I did find that part on the site you listed for around $100!! (thanks!).. I guess I can order these parts and have dealer install....
