Pass the Word, Selling the 4Runner. Thanks

After many years of faithful service the rear axle seal leaked on my 4Runner.

Did it in the garage while it sat overnight after a short trip on the highway. I have topped it off and planned on driving it enough for the computer to go through a complete drive cycle so I could pass emissions and do registration this year but the CEL came on. Ran it at AutoZone, heated O2 sensor.

Have a new borla exhaust and denso O2 sensor to be installed but I'm not risking driving it with the axle leak. Not worth risking damage to the rear end until it's fixed.

Since relocating to Cleveland, I no longer have access to a shop or tools, (or help) like I did in the past.

Posted in classified, more info there.

Priced at $2500, I have tried to take into account doing the axle seals, exhaust, ball joints, cv axles, and updating the shocks/springs into the price. Timing belt was done when I got it at 80,000 miles, about time to do it again. Could also use new tires.

Thanks everyone!

Loved this forum for years and know you all will help find a new loving home.

Comes with a lot of new parts and extras.

very nice truck at a good price considering there is no major work to be done to it. LittleCeasar, he explains that he is moving away, and has job to do on the truck, but won't have access to any tools or garage anymore. Considering that it also saves him the trouble of moving the truck there as he does not want to drive it with the axle seal problem.

irrelevant to the sale, but here I go, I don't know how you american can accept those crazy californian laws about car emission and inspection. It's like having a car makes you a criminal. A lot of people on the Lotus Esprit forum also have big difficulties with those too, and lot just part with the car since it's so much trouble. I just hope it does not spread to the other states and up here in canada.

I hope I just see it worse than it is. Question to OP, are those emission laws part of the reason you are moving away from california?

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I am actually living in Ohio now, where you must pass an obdII emissions check which uses the cars computer, not a dyno with tailpipe. Otherwise I'd be fine since it's not polluting, just can't drive it the required amount for the computer to read ready at the station.

Previously I lived in Salt Lake, but now that I'm in Cleveland I know noone with a shop or anyone to help. So I'm stuck with retail shop prices.

And right now I'm driving my 190E 2.6 daily that I have had since 1997. Only 120,000 miles but really only want to drive this occasionally.

My wife thinks we should get a newer Tacoma, but I still like 5 Gen 4runner alot. So who knows, lol. First need to get garage space for her car as I'm hogging it all up now.

Happy wife, happy life.

I also have a huge binder with all receipts for work and what was purchased, as well as original dealership pamphlets and info from 1997. Even the owners manual is in pristine condition.

I'm sure there's someone local to you that could just swap out an O2 sensor for $50.

Or am I not understanding what's wrong with it?

I could swap it if it wasn't siezed on the bung.

I have a whole new exhaust to install since the previous is looking rusty, but even after that, it must drive through a full readiness cycle which includes highway driving.

Can't do that until the rear axle seal is fixed as I don't want to damage any of the rear axle internals.

So I'm kind of in this limbo here where I can't register it until I drive it a bit, but can't drive it until I fix the axle seal. Once I get the temp registration, I'll have only 30 days to do the axle seal and exhaust/O2 sensor, drive a full readiness cycle, and have emissions done.

If I'm starting down that path, I'd just put the money in to also do front axles, suspension, a TBU, new tires and keep it or sell it for a much higher price.

So it's either sell as is, or put the money in and keep it.

Hope that answers your question.

Why not just get the rear axle seals done. Will take about 2 hours for both sides. Both OEM seals run less than $20. With oil, you can get all done for $40.

If you were in SoCal I would buy it off you.

You headed to the west coast anytime soon? Drive it my way.

As long as you have the gear oil topped off in the rear axle, you're not going to damage anything to get it down to a shop. How much is it leaking? I drove a hundred miles on a leaky axle seal and didn't hurt anything.

How many miles are on it? Why do all of the good deals seem to be on the other side of the country. If you make it to slc, I'll buy it off you.

Where the hell were you one year ago? I would've bought a plane ticket to Ohio as soon as you posted it.

^^ correct

my axle was leaking, drove it for a week 200+ miles, gear oil was barely low... like I had to stick my finger in farther... lol...

you're fine in cycling the truck... just stay away from dirt roads and rain. EDIT: standing water crossings.. not light mist/raining..

oh and $40 to throw in a temp seal to see if it's the bearings is a cheap test... its REALLY simple is pulling the axle to change the seal, but you do have to bleed brakes when done.

yes, you can do the axle on the street... I did eveything on my 65 mustang on a busy street, even rear axle swap to engine swap... heck engine trans and transfer from my 66 bronco... lol

Tools are minimal for a seal... nothing that can't sit in/on your lap...

good luck!

Any basic muffler shop can swap in a new bung for $40 and 20 minutes. These are all super, super minor things. You could bang out your whole list in an afternoon.
