Passed the Ice Test!

I don't think it made a difference what type of road you were on, except if you were lucky enough to get on a road/highway without an accident.

Koz

I didn't see one accident on my travels, but 101.5's traffic report said there was nothing but accidents all over 287 + 78.

I don't think the general public (and some on this board, sorry to say) knows much about driving and car dynamics. Just because you drive a 4x4 doesn't mean you can defy the laws of gravity or inertia. 4x4 only helps you start out, not grip the roads.

Dunlops have been getting beat down pretty hard on this forum and I think it's more the driver's fault than the tires. While they don't look like they'd do well off-road, they are pretty good tires for on-road. The storm before this last one was worse and I was on my way into NYC and the highways were covered in hard packed snow. There were guys in cars going ~5mph. I had no problems going ~25-35mph but when I reached curves, I slowed down to ~10-15mph. I didn't slip once. I also drove in VT when it dumped about 2 ft of snow. No problems with my Dunlops. It could be that my tires are new (just hit 5300 miles) but they worked fine in everything I drove thru so far. Most of the complaints are coming from guys that have more than 15k miles on their Dunlops. It could very well be that they start to suck as they get more miles on them. I guess time will tell.

I plan on doing some off-roading so that's one of the reasons I want new tires but I think I'll give these a shot at least once.

well, since you're somewhat referring to me

Bobby,

This last storm was only about 2/3 inches of snow that turned into a sheet of ice. The storm (10/12 inches of snow)before last was nowhere near as slippery (no ice).

The problem with several different tires that I've experienced and read about were tires with more than 15K miles on them. I had Mitchilin LTXs (on my PreRunner) that turned into shit after 30K miles. They looked like there was another 30K+ miles left. I have the Revos on now and time will tell, but so far they are the best tires I've had on the Taco.

Just wondering something, and if anybody else would like to chime in, please feel free.

I am wondering if downshifting into 3 from the drive position on the trani would effect it in a negative way? I too use it going downhill in icy or snowy conditions, and also in dry conditions when i don't feel like using the brake as much.

Does that damage the trani at all?

you know, i'm not 100% sure. i figure, if you don't 'manually' shift your truck and 'race' it all the time, then you should be good. it's there for a reason, know what i mean? and i don't mean that in a smart a** way at all.

also, check through the manual. i know with my 2000 T4R, it said to turn the overdrive OFF when towing, which i thought was odd, but then again, i know NOTHING about towing. so yeah, you should be fine using it sparingly i would assume.

00void - I wasn't really referring to you. It sounds like you do slow down enough in adverse conditions. I'm talking about people that drive the same way regardless of the conditions and expect the truck to perform miracles.

Koz - I realize the last storm was very icy but in both cases, I didn't have any problems. In fact, I went to Sears to pick up a few things and the whole mall (Paramus) was deserted. I tried to slide in the parking lot and even in the patches of ice, I wasn't sliding as much as I thought. Maybe I didn't have enough speed but there were too many light posts to do dumb stuff.

I will definitely be getting Revos before 15k miles. Probably closer to 10k. I want something more capable off road, not in the snow as these Dunlops did fine this winter.

chunderboy - It shouldn't cause too much of a problem. I downshift when I'm going on long downhill roads and don't want to warp my rotors. Oh yeah, I have an extra gear in my tranny so I don't know if it applies to you :p:D.

right on

I don't think you would damage anything but when you are on ice you do not want to have the reves up (in a lower gear). From a stop or slow start its better to have less torque/rpm to get the best traction. With a manual trans you can get better traction starting in a higher gear.

Efing bobby, always bustin' balls.

YES YOUR TRUCK IS BETTER. FINE I SAID IT.

Now i can't bust ya chops for not having fog lights on your T&H.

Shit

I still don't have my vent visors installed.

sorry to thread jack, but i've been thinking about getting a T+H bar myself. i was quoted at $60 for install, does this sound right/ fair? i wish i knew someone with a torque wrench, i'd do it myself

Bobby, the first winter I had with my truck, I was also happy with the Dunlops. They were nowhere near my Revo's, but they made the truck feel secure in the bad weather and got me where I had to go. At that time, I only had around 3,000-5,000 miles on them. I started to see my treads wearing down at around 14,000 miles but I didn't feel any problems in during the summer and fall, so I just forgot about it. When the first blizzard came of this season (2 foot one), I got stuck in a snow pile that I shouldn't have gotten stuck in. It took awhile to rock it back and forth. I was disappointed, but still didn't think it warranted a set of new tires. I also noted the traction light kept coming on more often thatn I remember. The next snowstorm, which was around 2 inches of heavy, wet snow, I was going the most 10 mph on a road that was hilly and unplowed. Without any warning, I lose traction and just lose control. I was fishtailing all over the place and was all over the road until the VSC kicked on. Luckily, there was no oncoming traffic and I just missed going into a ditch. That is when I made up my mind. At that time, I had 17,500 miles on them. When I brought it into the shop, the guy asked me how much driving I do because he said my truck look pretty new. He thought I had 30,000 on the tires and he said if I was lucky, I would have gotten 3,000 more miles on them. So, my point is don't be fooled by the way the Dunlop's perform when you first get the truck. You have to wait until you hit around 14,000 miles and then look at their performance.

Yea, guess you're right. Oh, and plus you don't have the tint on yet.

As for the torque wrench, just go to your local gas station or repair shop and throw a couple a couple of bones. He'll do it for you.

If you look at my rig, you will see the weston on there, with plenty of room for lights. I have 5 and 1/4" piaas and there is plenty of room for them. Also they don't get in the way of the plate, so the cops won't bust your berls for that.

I can send some pics to you if you want. Or you can just check the northeast meets section on the last meet, and you will see it.

Thought i would save save you the time.

00void - Don't you know the common currency among guys? Installing a bull bar is easy. Took me more time to take it out of the packaging than to do the actual install. About the time it'd take me to drink a beer. :D Chunderboy has the Westin bar and it looks a little wimpy (that's right chunderboy, you heard me :p). It bolts onto 2 points under the truck and that's it. The T&H has 4 mounting points and is much more substantial. I think they changed the lighting tabs to go on top of the bar now and not in between like mine.

Mark86 - I realize most people are having problems after 10-15k miles. That about the time I'm going to be switching to Revos. At the rate I'm going now, should be in a few more months.

chunderboy - you don't really want to start, do you?

thanx for the link! i remember seeing those pics. to be honest, i want to get a pair of Hella's. I think the 500s? not sure of the number, but the round ones. i had a pair of the rectangle ones (550s or 500s, again, forget the #) on my old Jimmy and they were incredible (and rather inexpensive too). the T+H looks like it wouldn't be able to fit them. i think the price of the Westin was like $170 for the black. i'd like to get the chrome to go with the color of my truck, but i'm choosing function over form

Here's a comparison:
