passenger airbag cover

I just wanted to do a follow up to help someone out for the next time this happens to someone.
The passenger side airbag cover from 96-98 along with the airbags were a different design than the ones from 99-02. They are NOT interchangeable.
Mine happens to be an 01 which is actually harder to get to so I wanted to give some pointers for the next guy. Everyone was telling me the only way to replace the cover is to remove the entire dash. I didn't believe them and luckily, I was right. It's not easy but possible. I didn't take picts but here's the best I can do with a write-up.
1. Remove the glove box by removing the 2 phillips screws at the bottom.
2. Remove the glove box back by removing the 3 10mm screws.
3. There are a number of plugs being held on by this panel. The one on the right you just need to use a flathead from the other side and slide it off. Remove the plug for the light (didn't even know I had a light). Then remove the last remaining wiring harness.
4. Remove the 2 gold 12mm bolts holding the airbag in place.
5. There are 2 more bolts that hold the airbag. One on each side and are 10mm and silver. They hold a bracket on the sides of the airbag.
6. After all bolts for the airbag are removed, you should be able to rotate the airbag down.
7. Stand on your head and you should be able to see the 3 screws holding the airbag cover on. They are 10mm. Use a couple flexible extensions for your socket and you should be able to get on them and unbolt them.
8. After the cover is unbolted, you need to rotate the airbag so that the metal prongs at the bottom release from the cover. It will take some time and possibly a little prying but eventually you will get it to release.
9. To install the cover, just do everything in reverse and you will be OK!

Nice, thanks for the write up! I am in the process of purchasing a sport where it looks like a dog got to the passenger side air bag cover. Glad to know it is possible to replace without removing the dash. I'll work on my handstands in the meantime

ALSO for safety. Since dealing with removing the airbag, if you didn't, you should have disconnected the negative terminal of the battery and give it at least 30 seconds before disconnecting the airbag. Just so you don't accidentally get blown in the face.

I think the important thing to note here.......is that there IS A LIGHT FOR THE GLOVEBOX?!?!? :surfer: I'm headed to the garage now to replace that bulb!
Thanks for the post! When I bought mine,the interior was spotless....except for the airbag cover. I look at it everyday and sometimes I just want to :50cal: it haha!

Not to bring an old thread back to life, but on step 8 you mentioned the metal prongs... Does anyone know if you're able to pull it down so that I can grab the 'lip' properly WITHOUT disassembling all of this? The bottom part of mine right above the glove box is lifting.
