Passenger Rear View Mirror Mod

Hey guys- in between my '11 LE and my '02 LE, I drove an X5. The one thing I hate about my '11 LE is the blind spot when backing into parking spaces or parallel parking. The one, and only one, feature that I truly miss from the X5 is when the car was in reverse, the passenger side rear view mirror would turn down to help see the curb, etc..

Has anyone modified their passenger rear to turn down when the car is in reverse?

theres a blind spot? between the ability to turn my head and the back up camera I have never found a need for such a modification

He's talking about being able to see the curb/wheels when backing up and yes you cannot see this when the mirrors are set normally. Would everyone consider this a blind spot? No.. but some people are actually accustomed to this so to them yes, it is a blind spot.

To the OP, I just manually direct my mirror down when I need it. The amount of work required to get this function on a 4R would be 100% custom.

Would this be rad? Totally. But as stated you'd have as much chance of making auto folding mirrors for parking as you would making this work for backing up.

Thanks for the responses. I was hoping that this mod might have been tried since most people on this forum have tried MacGyver'ing their in some way, shape or form.

And yes, it's a blind spot to me. Thanks Brandonium for spelling it out for others.

Anytime! My Touareg did this and it was very useful especially if you like parking closer to the curb or against parking spots where you can gain more room to prevent dings, etc.

Girlfriend always nags the shit out of me when I stop and move my mirror down before parking.

Knowing how to drive manually is a lost art these days.... everyone wants a gadget to replace common sense :moon: lol Kinda like a RAV4 mirror swap

A tad harsh don't you think since many of us have common sense just prefer something different from you.

This is coming from someone who is not an idiot yet prefers having the Rav4 mirror mod. :moon:

Not really going to be possible, as servo motors are required to be able to accurately put the mirror back in it's home position. Unless the limited models have memory mirrors, it's not an easy fix.

Other option would be have a circuit with a timer that automatically powers the mirror down for a certain time (say 3 seconds) when the vehicle is placed in reverse, then tells the motor to go back up the same amount of time when taken out of reverse. This isn't very accurate as the mirror control has no idea of the actual location of the mirror, so it'll get mis-aligned rather quickly.

In short, your best bet is to just manually lower the mirror when you need to.

I feel your pain, I've had a few german cars in the past (as does current '03 BMW) with this feature. Nice when backing next to curbs. But you drive a 4runner, just drive over the curb!

So you disabled your power steering and brakes on the 4runner? I bet your arms are ripped and your calves are not balanced :jump:

I get what you are saying though, I fully support the newer tech coming out but it has also made a lot of people reliant on it (back up cameras come to mind). We live in a world with almost unlimited information access and yet I think the average person "know how" seems less every generation.

P.S. Rav4 mirrors = Awesome

ya that was a jab for reaction lol

When you have no view out the back of your tailgate you'll take all the help you can get.
that's what steel bumpers are for lol

it was directed more toward things that "drive for the driver", blind spot recognition, crash avoidance etc etc

Crazy idea syndicate1

Why not just get Bjohnstongle's camera override dongle and RCA input kit and install cameras in your mirrors. This way you just have a flick a switch and look at the screen to see your wheel to curb spacing/ alignment when parking. You could probably even use it without the girlfriend knowing and I can think of a few offroad situations where it may be useful when you don't trust your spotter or he/she is on the other side of the vehicle.
