Paul Ryan Blames Poverty On Lazy ‘Inner City’ Men

West Virginia: 28 percent of all personal income in this state come from government programs
Mississippi: 26.2 percent of personal income from government benefits
Kentucky: 24.8 percent income from benefits
Arkansas: 24.5 percent income from benefits

EDIT: the thing that really disgusts me is the Paul Ryan's own bio highlights how he and his family benefited greatly from government spending and he can't even acknowledge it.
Paul Ryan Father passes away when Mr. Ryan is a teen. Mr. Ryan receives Social Security Survivors benefits to help pay for his upbringing and educations expenses.
Paul Ryan's Mother goes back to school at a PUBLIC (aka tax payer subsidized) university.
Paul Ryan's Mother "got on a bus every weekday for years, and rode 40 miles each morning to Madison." That would be a PUBLIC (aka tax payer subsidized) bus.
So the Ryan family received direct cash payments to help cushion the loss of the primary breadwinner. The Ryan family availed itself of cheap public transport (that cost the family a fraction of a car payment, gas, and insurance) to attend an a tuition subsidized university (that again cost the family a fraction of a private education).
Mr. Ryan himself immediately upon graduation goes to DC to work as a staffer (aka a government employee) and then runs to become a Representative.
His whole life is one of benefiting from government spending and he can't seem to even see it."

And are you insinuating that Social Security is an entitlement program paid for by the government? I'm pretty sure I pay into it with every dollar I earn and my employer pays too as part of my overall compensation structure. I'd much rather that be returned to my surviving family than government coffers or used to finance the next generation because the government was irresponsible with my contributions. The guy was an attorney and died at age 55 so I'm willing to bet he paid in more than his survivors ever received.

Obviously not, I just think it's silly to blame stuff like this on black people and then turn around and cut benefits that are used by their base.

As far as abuse of entitlement programs, I'd rather my tax dollars were abused by a thousand welfare queens than one poverty stricken family went hungry.

The problem is the programs are so massive and easy to take advantage that it becomes a lifestyle for many recipients. The government has a hard time weaning people off the teet. The only real incentive is either benefits expiring or the individuals ambition to want more. The latter may never materialize.

And the reason people are so vocal about these programs is because they have to witness the abuses with their own eyes. What does it say to a young person just starting out when their cart is full of ramen and knock-off cereal paid for by their entry level job when the person in front of them is buying crab legs, steak, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch with their EBT card?

And yes these programs are manipulated to buy cigarettes, non approved items, and illicit drugs. They continue to be used as a form of black market currency, regardless of the controls in place at retailers.

I don't think any reasonable person wants a family with legitimate hard times to go hungry. But when that family can eat better than the one working 60 hours a week, continues to procreate, and lives off the system for years at a time, it's a bit much to swallow.
 
Lets not forget about the welfare corporations receive so CEO's can continue to live lavishly while there workers continue living off low income.
 
Ryan continues to cherry-pick info, misrepresent conclusions, and fall back on tired racist stereotypes, yet the GOP continues to say he's a leader and a credible voice. When will the adults in the party push back?

I mean he cited Charles Murray, a white nationalist, who has used “racist pseudoscience and misleading statistics to argue that social inequality is caused by the genetic inferiority."

We live in a seriously bizarre world.

I am concerned about the fact that in the US every person who commits any felony crime at or after age 18 has a life long record as an ex-con - even if the crime was non-violent.

A friend of mine who made serious ethical judgement call failure a few years ago, at age 18, basically stole something from Target worth less than $500 and was charged and pleaded guilty to some type of theft or fraud. He only did community service as he was considered an otherwise upstanding citizen. He happens to be a white guy and I only bring that up because I know people view this as a racial issue.

My friend is a pretty good guy and this is the only seriously illegal thing he has done and he did it over 7 years ago when he was 18 and hadn't even graduated HS yet.

Because of our laws he has to check felon on every job application for the rest of his life. Even if 20 years go by without any issues with the law he will still be rejected from almost every job out there he applies for.

This is how our felons are treated, even those from completely non-violent crimes .... for the rest of their life they have no chance at starting over.

I think that is a big part of why criminals stay criminals. Luckily my friend had family and resources to get through the hard times. He has a sort of decent job but his career prospects for life are pretty much obliterated by this one non-violent mistake at age 18.

I see a possible correlation between letting non-violent offenders (after X amount of years) wipe their records and start over. At then they would be working which is good for everyone.

Its at least worth considering .... although it would represent a MAJOR shift in how America thinks about dealing with crime.

Has he looked into getting the record expunged? I have a good friend that also had an incident that resulted in a felony and was able to have it expunged and it no longer creates the problems you indicate above. This is usually an option for non-violent, single offenses like the one you described. If he hasn't looked into it, you should mention it to him. I think large in part the system has ways to address these issues.

In WV it's a lifestyle. My granddaddy, my daddy, me, my son, etc. I can't speak for other states though.

Paul Ryan is no more or less a dick than any politician on either side in Washington. C'mon, you know that. When it comes to dicks neither side has a monopoly.

It appears to me that Ryan was encouraging the listeners to get personally involved in mentoring inner city youth from 'down trodden neighborhoods' so that they could have something approaching a real chance. He talked about various methods for helping those young people — reforming welfare programs that trap people in poverty.....contributing to religious charities.....personally mentoring young individuals to help them find work and maximize their potential.

Meanwhile, the attorney general virtually endorsed these guys during the Zimmerman hype and let's not pretend that Barry hasn't stirred the race pool a time or two for personal or political gain either.

Your outrage here would be more meaningful if we had not had the privilege of reading your posts about white on black racism once a month while completely ignoring it when it happens in reverse.
