Pedal commander vs Sprint booster?

Just got my 2018 4Runner Limited (Arctic Blue / Tan Leather) recently. I previously had a 2007 Sport (White). The 2018 is a great looking truck but probably the ONLY thing I don't like about it is the throttle response.

I joined this site to learn and post pics of my new toy! I was not contemplating any mods or changing anything about it. However, when I started seeing other posters talking about the same throttle response opinion as what I had, I became very interested in the mod.

In doing a little research I pretty much liked the Sprint Booster more than the Pedal Commander. After a little begging with the wife, I finally called Jason to order the SB. Jason is a really nice guy and knowledgeable about 4Runners (other stuff too).

Looking forward to getting the SB and making the 4Runner the tuck that lasts as well as it looks! After I get it and play around with it, I will check back and post some thoughts.

I will be glad to get past the 15 post limit to start a thread and post some pics!

Exactly this. If this thing was $100 it would be a no-brainer. At $200 it's still a pretty good deal. At $300 it's way overpriced for what it is. The first person that designs a version (and has a chinese factory manufacture it) for $199 or $149 is going to make a killing.

Backstory: My 2014 Limited was stolen out of my driveway. Either they got the key code via my VIN and address, or they used some other method that avoided forced entry.

Anyone who's had their vehicle stolen knows the paranoia lingers and never really goes away, once it's happened to you.

Now I have a 2015 and have taken measures and added some safeguards.

I want to add the Sprint Booster's pedal lockout as an extra layer of security, but I'm worried it's a time-consuming process to get into lockout mode and then key in the three digit PIN each time. In comparison to say a kill switch which is simply a quick flick of one switch.

Can anyone comment on the ease (or difficultly) of using this pedal lockout feature on a daily basis? Roughly how many seconds to lock and then unlock, would you estimate?

Yep, about 10 seconds to do, and no one will ever be able to steal it! It's an awesome feature of the sprint booster. I play jokes on my friends and ask them to move my car. They get in, start it and hit the gas and nothing happens! It's a great anti theft device with this pedal lockout feature!

No one will be able to steal it? If someone wants your car, absolutely nothing will stop them. Tow truck, less than 10 seconds and they've got your car. Trust me, I did repo work years ago, There is nothing that can't be taken. Didn't even have to get out of the truck to hook and go.
 
Sprint Booster

Have had the unit a few days now and tried both modes (Green/Red) and numbers from 5-8 (mine came set at Green 5) and honestly that is where I’m leaving it. Higher than that or on the red mode the overall driveability is not what I personally desire (mostly in traffic daily) but it does exactly what I expected which is to clean up the throttle lag from the pedal input. I was after that type of driveability improvement because after 1.5 years of ownership that has been my only dislike. I don’t want quicker kick down of the trans in fact I want none of that happening unless I’m pushing the pedal noticeably and I found in the higher red settings that surely is the result – it’s too much. Maybe that’s good if you’re towing or have a lot of weight and that characteristic would be desirable but not as a daily driver for me.

One thing I do notice which I didn’t read in reviews of the product is how it affects the throttle plate opening based on foot pedal input, you can sit there at idle and change modes from Green 5, to Red 7 etc., back to off, blipping the pedal after each change, and you definitely notice the difference in speed of the throttle plate opening to the point you can hear the sudden induction noise of air in the red settings. I’m saying quick blips with your foot activates the throttle plate quicker. If you turn the unit off and attempt the same tests (same pedal pressure obviously) the difference is apparent.

Someone explained it well before with how the device works based on changing the voltage through the drive by wire system - don’t need to get into explanation or debate I’m just saying from the idle perspective test or throttle blip test, you can certainly get a sense of what is going to happen on the road. So overall – happy with the expenditure although I think it is a little steep for what it does especially for my findings it is only useful within a narrow bit of settings but I did obtain the result I was looking for simply at the stock setting, the annoying lag is no longer present.

Little concerned with how close the throttle pedal wiring was now to the coolant line that burned my hand as I took off the connector so I wrapped the line with a little aluminum insulation. Might do the others around there too that freaking hurt.

And perhaps there is some value in knowing this product is tried / tested amongst a wide array of vehicles with no reported safety concerns LoL, so I'd rather pay extra to have that assurance as well. But yeah - would feel better if it was $200! Hope this helps. :playball:

Well, yea, they can tow it sure. Lol. If they really really want it, but I think they'd go for a nicervehicle than to go to the attempt to tow it :) Using this is just an extra security measure. I know I feel better when leaving my car at the airport for a few days that any common thief can't just hot wire my truck and leave with it. Again, I do agree, if they want it bad enough, they will take it. Some ferrari a while back was stolen and loaded into an metal enclosed trailer so the lojack wouldn't work while inside. I wouldn't mind one.

Agreed. I would buy this in a heartbeat for $150.
 
I'm selling this for $40 over my cost. It's made in Greece is vehicle specific and is patented. I'm not here to blame anyone in Greece but the damn thing works, and I've sold over 80 of them for 5th gens. I'm just glad I haven't had any returns and people enjoy driving their vehicle more.

Criminals are lazy and paranoid. If they break in and find that the car won't start like it usually does, they will probably give up and move on to another target. The longer they are there the more risk they have of being discovered. They could just unplug the SB and plug back in the factory plug but unless they knew specifically about the SB they wouldn't know that. At least the SB gives additional security, although not bulletproof.

I've have numerous companies contact me from china that have imitation devices. Yes, they ALREADY exist. They do not work the same unfortunately. I also will not put my name on a product with no warranty and no USA based operations! This is a huge huge liability when you're dealing with something electronic that controls your gas pedal and electronics. They are practically begging me to carry the part, but I told them I can't. There is no support and it's a big risk.

So I got mine and have to say the shipping was fast. I installed it the day after I got received it. I have only driven around the block so far and can tell that the difference is absolutely noticeable and better! After driving around for the few weeks that I have owned it, the throttle response BEFORE the SB was flat and pretty much lame.

It has been raining here for a few days and my Blue Runner is in desperate need of a wash which I am going to do tomorrow morning. After that I am sure my wife and I will be tooling around and I am going to check out specific events such as passing, downshifting, etc.

I will have to say though it is a definite improvement over stock! :biggrin1::biggrin1:

Thanks for posting this. It really helped me make my decision. I went to Jason's website, but am not sure if the $289 price is discounted or not? It seems a bit steep.

Just ordered the Booster. After copious amounts of research I think it’s superior to the PC. Less complicated. KISS mentality just like the 5th gen 4runner!!
