Pep Boy Service

I drove down to Florida for the holidays I put around 1700 miles one way on my 03 4runner. Prior to that I went to Mississippi for Thanksgiving that was around 1200 miles one way. I got my oil changed and Front brakes replaced around mid-November. After the vacation before I headed out of Florida I needed to get my oil changed and tire rotated so I decided to go to Pep Boys. Well the service they gave me was the worse. My car sounds like crap. Oil spill all over engine compartment when they replaced the oil filter. They gave me a list of things that was wrong with my car. They made sound it like my car wasn't going to make it out Florida. And also they charge me a lot for an oil change and tire rotation. Never again I will go to Pep Boys. Did anyone have an experience like this with any shop?

Yes, unfortunately, places like that are pretty much just for buying a bulb or a socket, meaning when you are in a pinch and that's the closest place(Other than of course your AutoZone/Napa etc..).. As I went through the same thing with, dare I say, wally world's oil change!! :ybrick:

I needed an oil change asap(Before a trip and didn't have the time to DIY, or to schedule an appointment @ the Dealership). So yeah, oil all over the skid and everywhere in between.

My wife seems to have this problem whenever she goes to a large chain store/shop. Poor service and they treat her like an idiot; going down a long list of things that they feel need to be done or the car will implode. It's infuriating. I will say, however our neighborhood Autozone has ALWAYS been helpful and reasonable to my wife. They have always gone out of their way to explain things, offer advice and/or any help that my wife needed without trying to rip her off.

If I am not mistaken, the chain stores' service writers make a commission. Sooooo.....

It dumbfounds me how some of these chains are still in business with the poor service they constantly offer. One of my friends recently went to Pep Boys to mount snow tires for his car which were directional. They put the front driver's side tire on the wrong direction. Then he took it back and told them the front driver's side tire was the wrong direction and they then proceeded to take the passenger rear tire off.

Similar thing happened to me when all I went in was to get a tire plugged since I didn't have the money to buy new tires at the time.

Fortunately I've got a decent Toyota dealer that doesn't try to rip me off. I went in for a quote on doing the belts and pulley on my 4runner, and they told me I was ok to run the belts for another ~20k miles if I didn't want to change them because they're in great shape(4runner only had 60k and was garaged for 2 winters so it didn't surprise me). I was dumbfounded that they didn't try to get me to change them right then and there considering i'm at the 10 year mark. Not only that, they quoted me 500 cheaper than my closest dealer. My closest dealer (rt 440) however comes back with a list of shit that needs to be replaced each time and tries to rip me off.

If anyone's in NJ and close, I'd actually recommend East Coast Toyota by rt 17. Maybe they figured I wasn't an idiot after seeing the mods the 4runner has.
