Thanks guys, for what it claims (increase gas mileage, horsepower, torque, etc, ), I figured it was bull, I imagine that’s why it’s discounted from $368.00 to $68. The only way I got an increase in RWHP, and RWTQ, in my Corvette, was major engine modifications, seems that would stand for almost any vehicle. :thanks: :thumb3:

Performance chips are available that do make a difference. Turbo diesel are #1 in this arena, but some gas vehicles get "a small performance gain". Unfortunately, it doesn't look like anyone has done it for our 4runner. Could be a couple of things. The toyota engine does not have much room for improvement "as is", or just no market for it. Its not a primary tow work horse and it isnt a performance vehicle.
Any real gain would only be from a supercharger.
Maybe Im wrong, but i just got my 5th gen and started snooping around. Haven't found any proof of anything legitimate yet.

I will share my "chip experience" as it differs from most of the other opinions...
I installed a chip in my GTI 2.0 back in '96 (first year for OBD2)
I had other mods done as well- cam, exhaust, intake. The chip really pulled the other mods together and woke the little 4banger up. I was running high 16's stock quarter mile times and with the mods high 15's. Once the chip was installed I consistently ran very low 15's. Flirting with 14's (15.02...)
I know these are all low numbers, but they are real and show a dramatic improvement. The chip also eliminated the stock engines horrible hesitation on throttle tip-in. The trade off was I had to use premium fuel.
I think the gains were so noticeable because this motor had much more potential left in it (most do!). Our 4.0 is pretty sophisticated, so this may be an apples-oranges comparison....
Bottom line is- only one way to find out. Buy the chip!

Yes, Chips work on many cars, BMW, Mercedes, VW, (some) Nissan, (some)Fords, Audi etc.
They do not work on toyotas, especially 2005+ ones.
There are no companies that have decoded the toyota ECU, hence they are not able to build a chip to alter data directly as a plug-in device.
This is exactly why you see people going with a piggy back EM systems.
A friend of mine used to work for a company that, essentially, was writing aftermarket mapping codes for ECUs, they could not (didn't want to?) invest into decoding the ECU. piggyback EMS route was a cheaper route for them to offer.
All these chips for toyota are doing one thing - changing the signal sent to the ECU. And yes, they DO work for a few weeks. But what happens then is ECU learns the change, and balances out for the signal, bringing it back to the original numbers.
We have tried maaaany chips, or many different toyotas (is300, is250, 4r, taco, corolla s, sienna (yes, sienna
) scion tC, xB, xA, xD..) every single time we saw exactly the same behavior.

I can just hear the Toyota service manager laughing in my face when I bring my 5G in for an engine warranty issue, after he discovers my Brand X chip.
Not even sure I'd blame him.
No thanks ... the only chip mine will see will say "TRD" on it, along with my TRD SC.

Not an issue for me- they would have a heart attack if they started taking mine apart.
when I had a tC, during my warranty visits all work would usually stop in bays..
custom turbo, doors, sound, interior... every tech had to walk up to my car and see if they can figure out how to open a door..:ak472:

yup. but it needs to be tuned.
With a Unichip? I dont think so, it already has new maps loaded on it for cat backs, CAI, headers, etc.
Now I am sure you can get more power with something like the X-1, but for a simple rewrite of the fuel and ignition maps, this Uinchip might be a good option?
