Performance Enhancements [Help]

Hey guys, I just bought a 1995 3.0L V6 4Runner. I just replaced all the rear bumpers that were rusted out and now I'm interested in making some performance enhancements. I only have ~$1500 to spend and I'll probably land up doing most of the work on my own.

Basically... I wanna give the truck a little flare and let it stand out on a road a little bit.

I have no idea what to do in terms of boosting performance and getting a nice sound out of the engine :biggrin2: , so I'm open to any suggestions.

Right now I was looking at putting in a K&N intake. My local Pep Boys has it in stock for $240 and my autobody shop offered to install it for $100, but I may land up installing it myself. I don't really want the truck to be too loud, I just want it to produce a nice sound when I accelerate or rev up a little...

I was thinking about putting in a new exhaust system, but the previous owner invested $1200 to replace the existing exhaust system, because there were a bunch of wholes in the muffler. Although, it's not a performance exhaust system, so it doesn't really produce a new sound.

Oh yeah.. and I was also considering modifying the outside, maybe some lights and eventually new rims/tires.

Don't waste $340 on the K&N.

For that matter, any money spent on trying to get something more out of the 3.slo is a total waste.

If you want to change the sound, just change to a lower restriction muffler.

I guess I'll just get a K&N filter then, because I need a new one anyways.. How much performance gain do you think I'd get from a gibson muffler and a free flowing cat? Or would the muffler do enough for performance and sound?

in my experience with cars, mufflers arent going to add much at all
sure, it may let the gases out a little easier, but dont expect anything out of it really. if you think you feel the difference then its a placebo etc

if youre going to do it, just go and have something made that may weigh less and be slightly less restricting

Speaking of mods, I think what I would like to do is my buddy ran an idea to me and I want to do something with my air intake. It produces a louder sound and a better response.
Does anyone know how to do that in the GTA?
